Yeah, exactly.  So then you do that on the outside and the inside, and trap the volume of the cylinder between the two approximations.

So it's basically the same way you calculate the area of the circle - it's just that the hard work is already done for you?  I like proofs like that.

Well, it wasn't the easiest to do, because I did have to re-generalize to circles inscribed inside of regular 2^n+2-gons, but then the work was pretty straight-forward.

... Actually, I think that may have been the first proof I've done in my life that actually needed a page to explain.  Huh.  But it was kind of crazily easy, once I stopped being an idiot...

How strange.

Reading back through this thread I am wondering if it'd be possible to get a Latex plugin for the forum software. Those formulas look ugly as perl written out like that.

So, Algebra one here.
I have this fraction:
8x-8y
-------
8x+8y

I have to find the restriction, and then factor it down to simplest from. Any ideas?

What do you mean by "find the restriction?"

The number the variable can't be.

I think it's what it can't be. In this case, it can't be 0 and that's it, I think. As in dividing by zero.

Well, that would be where the denominator (8x+8y) equals 0. Good?

Don't spend them all in one place.

I got it while I was waiting for a reply. Thanks, sort of. I tagged the tread for when I get into the "fun" stuff.

Sorry.  I've been getting a bit bored with offering "vanilla" hints recently.

So, I have a history of bad math teachers (I.E., they do a piss-poor job of explaining it) and, being the one in the class who is best or tied for best in the class, it falls on me to explain to people. Which I am terrible at. So, anyone got a good way for explaining how to solve trig equations?

I probably know more about trig equations than you want to know.

What do you want to know?

So, what can anybody here tell me about the Taniyama-Shimura-conjecture?

edit: ooh, trig.

you can't figure out the restriction unless you can remove the y variable from the bottom

Yes you can. x <> -y is a restriction.
