!!Project!! Skyforge is go... Now what?

So I embarked on a volcano and created the beginnings of a network of magma ducts in the sky extending from the summit of the volcano. My forge industry and magma-based euthanasia chamber is based there, but what else have people done with this sort of thing?

This is a useful feature..and this is DF.. so im gonna assume its bugged
That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

Using a vast amount of mechanical gubbins, water based triggers and semi-random opening floor hatches, make it rain magma.

If only....

I just genned a world with 100 z-levels in the sky.

I was thinking about doing a combination Orbital Magma Cannon (Tons of pumps drawing magma causing a huge outflow of magma) combined with a paved sky full of hatches connected to Dwarven Central Command (A room full of corresponding levers).  All this would be done on a flat map in order to facilitate maximum magmaliciousness.

I was going to have this system be the bottom layer of my fortress in the sky.  Imagine walking up to a massive floating city with magma pouring out the bottom randomly, making the surrounding landscape a veritable hell.

Smells like Dwarf Fortress.

I would suggest making the magma recycle into a cistern/drain off the map on the z level below the surface.  Also build walls that force them to walk under the drop points (on top of these walls, place marksdwarves to fire bolts at them as the approach the target areas.  Link pressure plates up to the magma drop as well as the levers (automated and manual fire modes)

Make a magma waterfall at the entrance of your fortress (Make sure you can halt the magmafall if needed) and have a dwarf shoot wooden balista bolts through it, the bolts should become !!bolts!!.

I have only gotten a few layers in before my computer crashed, but I think it's because i tried to cover an entire worldtile worth of space. Next time I'll think smaller.
