You are the man who appreciates the bump
When this great thread begins to drop
Because all our frowns
seem to turn upside-down
When it gets bumped right back to the top?

Makes me sad when I realise that like 80% of viewers believe in what this song says. I mean... how dare the authors to call it "history"?

Uhm... what? The song doesn't exactly say anything controversial. Everyone knows Kazakhstan has long had problems getting their blocks to tessellate.

What? Are you trying to say that giant blocks DON'T fall from the Russian skies?
Damn it music, you've lied to me again!

What? Are you trying to say that giant blocks DON'T fall from the Russian skies?
And that Kazakhstanian skies aren't full of oddly shaped pieces?

On the other hand, 90% of American viewers were (probably) surprised to know that Russia wasn't always an evil, dark, satanic communist state. ... right? o_O  Frankly, Russian history was never, ever, ever touched on in my American public schooling.  The besides the part where they say we should hate the USSR and be glad we beat them somehow?  *shrug*

You beat them?
I thought you guys just took aim at each other and had a stare off for a while, then shot a guy into space and called it a day.

Well, and we fought proxy wars against them, but yeah, pretty much. We still beat them because we're still around and they aren't. :P

I'd hope most Americans knew that Russia wasn't always communist. After all, there was that Don Bluth Anastasia movie, and we learned a bit about the Bolshevik revolution in my school. By a bit I mean a few paragraphs.

edit: And didn't Lennon say, "Remember, Remember the 7th of November?"

No. No he didn't.

"...I am the man who arranges the blocks
That continue to fall from up above.
The markets are free! So much money for me!..."

and further should be replaced by

"I am the man who arranges his debts
`cause my factory stopped due to customers lack.
Economy`s crashed, I`m street cleaning to live,
Dear God, please bring our Union back!"

Seriously guys. I hope no one of you will ever see his country crashed to pieces. If you think the life became better, just look at this birth/death graph: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ru/a/ac/RSRF.png . Birth rate is blue line.

Well, there was that. And then Rocky won the Cold War singlehandedly. Or rather, with two fists.More seriously, yeah, we can say we won because we're still a country.

On the subject of learning about Russia, I know tons about it from my own research. All the way from the first Scandinavian settlers, to the mongol occupation of the Kievan Rus, to the vast empire of Novgorod... Yup, interesting stuff. It's a shame I could only find a few textbooks.

Canadian schools (Or at least the ones I've been to.) teach Russian history, but nothing before the last Tsar, and with little information about "modern" Russia.
