Author Topic: I'm terribly disappointed in you guys [Planescape: Torment rerelease]  (Read 4288 times)

Planescape: Torment was released on GoG.com for a tenner today and none of you have made a thread on it yet? I know GoG have been morons lately, but I never got the whole rage thing over the stunt anyway, and they're most definitely forgiven now.

Planescape is supposed to be one of the best RPG's ever, although underappreciated at launch. It's been terribly hard to find, and hard to run when found, unlike the baldur's gates who have been rereleased at least twice. Now GoG has it in a single simple installer (instead of 4 CD's) compatible with winXP - win7.

I've never had a chance to play it myself before, so it'll be interesting to see if the hype holds up.

I'd write more but it just finished installing. Please spoiler the juicy bits.

I thought GoG went out of business. I seem to recall reading something about that...

I thought GoG went out of business. I seem to recall reading something about that...

They did a stunt recently where they changed the website to say they couldn't continue on with the current GOG model, then after a few days revealed it was just an upgrade to non-beta site, rather than the going out of buisness that everyone assumed.

I'm with olemars with not getting why so many people got pissed off about it, just seemed like a harmless prank to me.

Also as to why noone made a thread, I'm assuming it's because ive see it covered on every major gaming news site, and everyone is allready aware? It's definatly a good game though.

I've been putting off playing this game, mainly because there's other newer games that I want to play and because of my studies. Dammit, academia! Why won't you let me enjoy myself!

Here's why.

Not everyone downloaded their games immediately upon purchase. They planned to buy the game, then wait until they actually had the space and/or time to play it. With GOG just spontaneously cutting off their service nobody could download the games THEY paid for. I was one included.

Before I disappear into the massive dialogue tree, I should point out this.

Edit: I'll also pre-emptively request that this thread doesn't become a GoG flamewar...

Non-spoiler:  The thief class sucks, don't bother.  Ever.  Also, don't bother grinding for XP, especially past the mid-game.  Quest XP is pretty friendly in this game.

I've already played and beaten it. Don't really feel the need to play it again, it wasn't the kind of game that I felt like anything would be different with a second playthrough.

As for GoG, they basically violated my trust by pulling down the website and going "OH GOD WE'RE DYING. But we'll let you download your games on Thrursday," and then when they put the site back up, the GoG Downloader wasn't working and wasn't going to work until they completely rewrote it, apparently, so to download anything you had to try to get them through HTTP. So *facepalm* at GoG. Essentially they pulled an Epic Fail and as far as I can tell they didn't even do anything notable besides screw with the website, break the downloader, and piss half their fans off (and acquire and release Baldur's Gate 1).

I should point out this.

Also this for making the ui pretty again after installing the widescreen mod.

I agree that GoG did a shitty thing which probably hurt them more than any publicity they got. I just couldn't muster any anger about it though. They did illustrate the danger with digital distribution of the steam model, and one of the big points with GoG is that they offer standalone installers you can safeguard on your own. It just was mega-idiotic to illustrate it by fake-shutting down their own service like that, since they hurt the trust people put in them. Some say GoG should fire their PR department. I suspect that they would need to hire one first.

Can't say I care really.

Though, it did give me a hankering to play Patrician 3, Port Royale 2 and Gangsters(GoG doesn't carry this).  Which I am doing now.

Google Images has plenty.  Look, a guy tattooed himself with the logo.  That's a sign of quality my friend.

Long story short, the gameplay itself is pretty bland, but it's probably definitely the most intriguing and well-written RPG ever released.  It's beyond crazy, and will expand your mind to read.  It's not that fun in a sense, because you're basically playing a novel (with branching story of course), but it's worth it.  Here's a great overview of the game by a professional art-game-wanker.  It's full of spoilers though.

Fuck year, Planescape.  I already have it of course, but it's great to see it get some love.

I don't suppose this recent re-release is compatible with linux? (or, more specifically, windows emulators?)
