Computer assistance needed - .dll problems
« on: September 28, 2010, 12:58:33 am »

So I messed up my computer. I opened the dfhack dll file in Notepad to see how it worked, and now half the dll files on my computer aren't working properly. I cannot play DF. Help me. How do I reset the dll files?!

(Running Vista, if that makes a difference.)

No, you just expected an answer too soon. We've no obligation to answer your question quickly, or even correctly.

Fuck man, most people know that you will screw up almost everything in your computer by opening a .dll file with notepad or something else.

I suggest formating your computer. You'll lose everything but at least things will run.

...well shit. I am an idiot. Could I just stick everything without a .dll on an external hard drive and reformat?

Are they just opening with notepad right now? If so open explorer, click tools -> folder options, and find dll. There should be a reset, default or some kind of other option in there (I'm translating from Hebrew, so name might be entirely off). Should be in the lower right, I think.

What. Dwarf mc dwarf, I do hope you're trolling.

There's no harm in associating .dll files with Notepad. Windows will use the correct method of using the files regardless of user-specified associations. Whatever's wrong with your system, it's not this.

However, there's ways of getting rid of that association if you really hate it. Google picked up on a few when I had a look just now. One in particular looks to be the best method, but the caveat is, I have no idea how to specify a 'null' association with it. But I guess you could experiment.

Click Start, All Programs, Accessories. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
When the command prompt comes up, type:

assoc .dll=

...You could leave it at that and see if it works. Or you could write the word "null" after the equals sign, or maybe put a space there... I don't know. Something will work.

There's also the registry-editing method, but I'm too tired to re-discover wherever I stumbled across it.

Hope it helps

Hm. Well, I seem to be able to play DF still. Guess I just lost a file somewhere or something. Genned a new world and it turned out fine.

Okay, so nothing appears to be broken. Don't freak me out like that, McDwarf.

You can do anything with the magic power of DOS.

Or maybe not, I have no idea, I just Googled it.
