Eight Week Work Out
« on: September 27, 2010, 12:24:27 am »

So, a couple of weeks ago, in the depression of two years with no real work, only the odd day every few months, I decided to look up the armed forces. I've always loved the sea, and always wanted to travel; the Royal Navy jumped out at me.
A week later, I visitted my father. We went on a hike in the forest for an hour or so and I told him about it. He then told me how he once wanted to join, but didn't, and regretted it forever more.
So, now, I'm worked towards that. The Royal Navy, as a Seaman Specialist.

But.

I need to get in shape for it. I need a decent BMI, I need to be able to pass the fitness test, and so forth.

My BMI reading says I need to lose from 114kg to the 82.5kg - 95kg range. I downloaded and printed out some stuff from their website to help me with this, and they have an eight-week-long training programme you can do at home, along with dietry guidance.

The work out is a 5-6 day p/week regime, mostly jogging, muscle training (sit ups, press ups and dorsal lifts) and swimming.

And on a final note, I've spent the last year getting about 30 mins activity a day. As in, going to the toilet and making food. Bad, eh?

================================================

Week 1;
Day 1; Run
"Attempt to run at a comfortable pace for 15-20 minutes. If this cannot be achieved, jog/walk/jog as an alternative.

I spent the first two minutes running, slowed to a jog/wakl/jog with a total of about 10 minutes jogging and 6 walking.

Overall: 20 minutes (aprox) / 20 minutes.

====================

Day 2; Strength Training
Press-ups: 5-10 press ups x 3 sets.
Sit-ups: 10-15 press ups x 3 sets.
Dorsal Raise: 10-15 dorsal raises x 3 sets.

Achieved;

1 Press up,
15 Sit Ups,
15 Dorsal Raises,
4 Press Ups,
15 Sit Ups,
15 Dorsal Raises,
0 Press Ups,
15 Sit ups, (I was in agony by the end of this)
15 Dorsal Raises. (I was shouting the number of raises during this, heh).

====================

Day 3; Swim Recover
Non-swimmers should register at a local pool for swimming instruction; weaker swimmers should concentrate on improving all of their strokes for 20-30 minute swim periods.

Achieved;

I havn't a clue. My calves were in pain from using them for longer than 10-20 seconds due to the previous two days, so I took a rest every that-much, or tried to switch between swimming/treading water with my arms and legs. It wasn't the best way to work out, but it got my heart pumping - and my lungs filled - but nethertheless, I can say I tried.

====================

Day 4; Rest Day
Damn straight.

====================

Day 5; Strength Training
Press-ups: 5-10 press ups x 3 sets.
Trunk Curls: 10-15 press ups x 3 sets.
Plank Position: Plank Position, hold for 10 seconds x 3 sets.

Achieved;

S1: 1, 15, 10
S2: 0, 14, 10,
S3: 1, 15, 10.

(I have a useless arm :P)
====================

Tomorrow; Run
Attempt to run at a comfortable pace for 15-20 minutes. If this cannot be achieved, jog/walk/jog as an alternative.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say, but if you want to lose weight and remain fit, switch to eating more protein and vitamin-laden foods. Don't just cut out food and expect to be all right.

Yeah, that was quite a mess... I was pretty tired.

I'm basically doing an 8 week work out to get into the Royal Navy and through their fitness test.

It comes with a diet plan, so no worries... It's not that far from what I normally eat, anyway! Weetabix, pasta and fish sandwiches. All I need to change is from white to brown.
I don't really eat much else. xD

Obviously, the Brits have much better sailors than us Americans.

LOL Oops. I looked it up on my printed stuff... 12.48, not 1.48.

As I said, I was rather sleepy at the time of writing :P

So, half of a 5k run in 12.48, or a mile and a half in 12.48.

So that's...one and a half 8 minute miles?

Not too horrible a challenge.

Keep in mind that i've spent the last year or so spending 90% of my time on my ass, on this computer. Really, I'm suprised i'm not obese... I mean, REALLY obese.

Anywho. did my first strength training just now;

Press Ups: 5-10 x 3 sets.
Dorsal Raise: 10-15 x 3 sets.
Sit Ups:  10-15 x 3 sets.

I did;
P, D, S
15, 15, 1
15, 15, 4,
15, 15, 0.

Now my arms are shaking, but, eyes on the prize! Swimming tomorrow, then rest day. :)

The operation cardio thread in creative projects may give you some advice for what you want to do. It's dead, but still informative.

Very informative. Had a quick scan, will check it out tonight. :)

For the record, I've been eating healthily for quite a while now. Water, weetabix, sandwiches, cooked meal, no fizzy drinks, no acidy food, the occasional pizza a week and such. Now that i'm dieting, I'm following the same thing, exception of the pizza, and i'm suddenly feeling like I need more food.

Not really, as I can run 3000 meters in 12 minutes.
With enough practice, you can run pretty durn fast. The thing is though, about aerobic fitness, you have to work out every day. A common saying is that for every two weeks you miss, you lose a month of training.

My record for the two mile (3200m) is 11:41, personally.

Then I will aim to defeat thee! First, I need a fucking running track ! Eugh!! They knocked down the local stadium last year, and there isn't a running track for MILES around now. I've gotta run on a cardio machine, which definetly isn't the same =[

Ew, yeah it degrades very quickly. Weight training degrades fast too if you let your diet slip.
