Something that went wrong when I first started? I had one Adventurer that started right next to a pack of wolves and was killed less than a minute in.

You can't butcher humanoid species like humans, dwarves, or even trolls. You can steal the clothes and sell them for a decent amount, but I'm pretty sure attacking anyone instantly sets the whole civilization against you, even if it's someone nowhere near other villagers. If there's an animal/monster attack on a village you may want to avoid everyone and rob the dead.

You can encourage that sort of thing to happen by giving animals a wide berth while sneaking and then herding them back towards the nearest village. You usually wind up with plenty of animal corpses to butcher that way as well as the odd article of clothing or bolt, which can be traded in at the local stores for a surprising amount of cash. Even better, you don't have to travel very far to sell the goods; if you're using Play Now!, it's about the one way to easily afford a backpack so that you can carry more than two things at once.

It's also a good way to train as you can steal kills from villagers after they have an animal in a headlock or finishing off an elephant that was crippled by a Guard. Sneaking around constantly levels up Ambusher as well, which is useful.

This is making me feel better about how much I suck! I drank too much blood/Ichor and was too full to eat actual food...

(And it turns out i'm better at killing things than I thought. That is, if fighting everything whilst lying down changes much. Except now i'm looking for something more dangerous to run from - will any map have enemies like that? I mean, i've seen cave crocodiles and troglodites, but only with their names as "---- has been caught in a spider web.)

( I mean I tried on a generated map, but as this version has no shops yet, I can't think of any way to get the weapon style of my choice. I really should post these questions somewhere else)

Wait, WHAT? Skinless ass? You mean like a mule or donkey, right? RIGHT?!

EDIT 3:
Sorry to keep posting, but the only thing I could find to attack was an Elephant...
It broke my arms and legs, but I severed an artery. It ran, but not I can only move 3 steps without passing out from the pain.

I'm having Elephant stew if it's the last thing I do!

EDIT 2: I started on a previous version it's... more 'Fun'. I wrestled a bear to death, but he broke my feet and one of my hands. My pancreas was damaged too. I tried to run, but a Cougar ambushed me, and I died. YAY!

EDIT: Ok, ok, i'm stupid. I fixed that problem.

According to the wikia, if your body or clothing is on fire jumping into water won't put it out. Apparently, Toady hasn't implemented much of an "extinguish" function.

Warned ya.

There are some advantages to lying down, namely some attacks can't hit you (I'm not sure which, but I think that includes projectiles), but you're also really slow.

If you wants some real dangerous shit, check the map for caves. Just in the vicinity of the entrance you'll find more interesting stuff than the standard horses and buzzards, like elk birds. Go a couple floors in and you might find a troll or two, but careful because you might also run into a giant cave spider in an enclosed area. Stealth is you friend.

As for the spider web thing, that's just a bug. Pops up when I'm adventuring all the time.

Yeah, going with an older version (.31.12 was the last one with shops) was a smart move. Right now Toady is leading up to a major overhaul for Adventure Mode, but currently it's in a transitional phase where there's room and ground work for the new stuff, but it's not here yet.
It's like when a new house doesn't have any furniture in it.

Mmm, I don't think there is any advantage at all lying on the ground. Being prone makes you unable to dodge anything & without a shield, you'll just get beaten, shot up & trampled more easily.

On Topic: Ever tried using a 'Play Now!' Kobold in the slightly older versions? When you start out naked & unarmed? Yeah...a lot of things will go wrong just trying to get at the nearest town...just about everything is bigger than you and most of them are hungry and/or pissed.

Ok, well becoming a legendary (several times somehow?) shield master armour user and fighter rendered me invincible against what I could find. I'm going to check the maps for some of those Lets Plays...
For some reasno, nothing bad is happening.

I noticed that for some reason megabeasts are having a really hard time hitting you if you lie down. It is weird since most of them can charge you and knock you over.
Also skill levels grow exponentially faster if you fight while lying down (I might be wrong though)

Ok, something happened.

I've been trying for ages to get a world with enemies that aren't wildlife, because I get to legendary sword/shield/fight and everything dies.

I notice that a more evil (purple) area is on the map, but it's across the sea. I figure out how to get in the wter, and swim across. Halfway there, I rest on an island, and set off again. I'm almost there, when I walk onto an island made of ice. Thinking nothing of this, I get back in the sea and start swimming again.

Heh, Legendary warror, encased in ice.

Wish Icould make a world with more powerful enemies...

I started a Play Now adventurer in my old fort of 2.5 minutes. I tried attacking one of my dwarves that abandoned and I got brutally murdered in a few punches :P

Started an adventurer, picked up some allies, went to see the fort I just lost (which was the whole point).

Proceeded to jump off a ledge and land on my sunken farms.

Here's the problem: while I was walking down a long underground tunnel, a merchant hammerdwarf lost somewhere in the ruins of my fort began fighting a horde of naked mole dogs. I knew because the messages from the attacks filled my screen and lagged my game with every step. The hammer dwarf was incapable of killing his enemies, but they in turn could not kill him.

It took an hour just to get through that one long, black, empty tunnel.

Plenty of things went horribly wrong.

You have bled to death.
Your brain has been broken.
Miscellaneous body parts being removed.

Then I picked up a sword and became the scourge of wolf populations. Then I got .12 and it was waaaay easier.

Lets see.  When I first started, I think I ended up getting killed when I stole something.  The second time I was eaten by a jaguar as soon as I left town.  In the first game where I actually knew what I was doing, I met a rather interesting fate.  I visited a human settlement and asked the mayor if he had any quests.  He wanted me to kill this chameleon monster that had been wandering around their town.  I find the chameleon monster in his hut, and talk to him a little bit, before engaging him with my spear.  Clearly he's intelligent and in charge of this town, but they asked me to kill him right?  So it shouldn't be a big deal.  This is when I find out that armor is good when fighting an unarmored opponent(he barely hit me) and spears are fun, but not particularly deadly.  I think I had everything red on him, and had resorted to wrestling to train that up too.  Then I got bored and decided to wander around town waiting for the Chameleon to bleed out.  As soon as I step outside, everything goes crazy.  I've got crossbowmen shooting impotently at me, and every poor peasant in town trying to kill me.  I get quite a few lucky strikes, often crippling if not killing them in the first blow before moving on.  I broke one kid's skull, and bruised his brain.  I think I also stabbed him in the kidney or something.  Eventually I retreat into the house, because I don't like being that surrounded.  The chameleon is sitting in the corner, bleeding all over himself, and I back up a little so I can fight guys one at a time for awhile.  Nobody comes in, so I step forward and open the door.  Suddenly that kid who's skull I broke slams into me, pushing me back through the door and against the far wall.  I slide into another corner, trying to get out from under the crowd of people that just came in, but they quickly overpower me and knock me unconscious.  I sat there for like 5 minutes while they beat me to death.  They had trouble killing me because of my armor, but had no trouble knocking me out every time I regained consciousness.

That's how I remember it anyway, and I learned not to attack civilization leaders.

Uhh.

I did a quest to kill a Dwarven leader (quest given by a different Dwarven leader) but when I got there, their society erupted into chaos and everthing died. I went back to complete it, but the same thing happened and I couldn't complete the quest.

This could be renamed 'Things that go wrong for you in adventure mode' but that's a bit vague, discuss.
