Things that went wrong when you first started
« on: September 26, 2010, 06:57:47 pm »

I'm new at this whole DF as a whole, and the forums themselves (so don't hate me!)...

Well, as Fortress mode was difficult (I'm going through all the guides though, I'll try again later) I decided to try out the Adventure mode.

The interface was easier, but that didn't stop me from setting a fire  next to a human settlement when trying to pick berries (which reminds me, do they ever go out so long as there's stuff to burn?).

Anyhow, due to hunger, I've gone on to look for another settlement. While I know how to buy things,i'm not so sure how to make money. So I figured I'd have to wait until a peasant wanders of and kill him/her then butcher the corpse (it does work on people right?) so that I don't starve.

Well, I'm going off point here, what I'm asking is for humerous times people have gone wrong, just to put things into perspective, and generate a few laughs.

(Again, don't hate me if this is spam. Just tell me so and i'll read the guidelines)

Burned to death?

Oh, wait, I want to add one!

I was just chased into the depths of a mountain by 10 or so Giant scorpions. And proceeded to kill them all with my pretty-good sword skill.

And now i'm going to die of hunger or thirst!

Didn't pack any skills and pissed off the local maceman. I was shocked (In a good way) when I realised you could vomit when having a stomach injury.

You can't butcher humanoid species like humans, dwarves, or even trolls. You can steal the clothes and sell them for a decent amount, but I'm pretty sure attacking anyone instantly sets the whole civilization against you, even if it's someone nowhere near other villagers. If there's an animal/monster attack on a village you may want to avoid everyone and rob the dead.

The most reliable way to get money and train at the same time is killing and butcher wild animals then selling their parts in a village. If you're really desperate for money without getting into danger by fighting you do the boring thing and keep picking up an item found in infinite numbers like snow or rocks and selling them for a very low price (1 of whatever currency per item).

However, if you're using version .31.13 or later else there aren't any stores, so it doesn't matter at all.

OK, things that went wrong when I first started?
I didn't put anything into the swimming skill and thus it was nearly impossible to learn enough that water wasn't instant death.
I wasted all my arrows on nothing.
My first time as a wrestler I attacked animals that were still conscious before getting armor and as a result got killed by both a chimpanzee which clawed my throat open and a horse that charged me and stomped me to death after I passed out.

(Ok, thanks)

Well, I'm running deeper into the cave, so something stupid is BOUND to happen soon.
Sorry to keep talking, but not many people are responding. Figures.

I needed to ask: Is it possible to sustain your need for drink by drinking the blood & ichor that splatters on you? I'm doing it now, but it might not last...

The weird thing is that blood counts as food instead of water.

It's better than nothing, but it can both fill you up and fail to satisfy hunger, so you should try actual food (including any animal part but the bones) first. Like the guy before said, it may also poison you or give you a syndrome, so don't go drinking the blood of anything too strange.

When I first started, I went to sleep in an elf retreat, around a couple of other sleeping elves because I thought they'd be a buffer between me and the wilderness (haha.)
Woke up in a lake, drowning with a few elves. Seems I didn't check it was ice. :X
