You don't need a specific metal, any metal will pierce them since they don't wear armor.

I made 20 something rows of 4 loaded with 10x copper/bronze/bismuth bronze/steel menacing spikes and just left it repeating after the miner escaped. Only a "brute" type was able to survive two pulls of the lever(was long enough that they couldn't avoid two), and they came out with numerous broken parts and were pretty easy kills.

Aaaaaaaand this way of covering up the spoilers has officially died for me. I mean, guys, come on! Cotton candy? Clowns? A circus!? Dwarfs don't like any of that Elven crap! Admittedly the idea of shooting actual clowns with actual cotton candy sticks is pretty damn amusing, but nothing else about the comparison really makes any sense.

Demons

are clowns? How? Unless a literal 'clown demon' shows up, that's just silly. Earthworms/puce devils/whatever can't be clowns... they don't even wear makeup! Plus, it ruins the mood. It makes breaching into the HFS seem less like sending Gandalf to go fight the Balrog and more like sending the Teletubbies to go find that big happy sun with a baby face.

While we're on the topic, if we need to ruin the HFS with weird non-spoiler names, I think 'big-happy-sun-with-a-baby-face' is a very suitable name for the Eerie Glowing Pit. And 'red teletubbies' can be

[In all actuality it doesn't bother me too much, but it just seems a little... out of place(?) for the Dwarves to be fighting clowns. I mean, I get that they're small... so they're supposed to be the circus-going children in this equation? You'd think a circus would be the last place you'd ever find a dorf, since most of them are dry.]

Are you kidding? A toy car containing two hundred guys with face paint, red noses, squirting flowers, and size 114 shoes vs. a mob of unruly eight-year-olds with cotton candy weapons riding the elephants into a massive war in the big top?

That would be fucking awesome.

Also, the dwarves are the kids because they're short, surly, and prone to violent outbursts.

Far as I'm aware, the term "clowns" came about after the region containing the hidden fun stuff was called the "funhouse" (which is found in carnivals along with clowns). The circus metaphors took off after that.

You missed a zero; demons are size 10,000,000.  For comparison, elephants are 5,000,000.
