Holy carp, people and their long hair. I'll second that that's a rather cute picture though, Renault. If it's any consolation, I had a pair of old jeans with big Blue-and-Black stripes on the sides, which used to belong to my 40-year-old uncle. I wore those things every week for close to 5 years before they finally wore out. :/

Also yeah, Heat + Hair (especially long hair) is bad news.

The reason hair has kinks or curls to it is because of the unique protein chain that makes up your individual hairs. Everyone's hair has a slightly different chemical makeup, of long chains of proteins. Some of these individual proteins have a weak molecular attraction to one another (hydrogen bonding) which causes the protein chains to bend and curl back on themselves, which is reflected in the way your hair bends and curls as a whole.

Heating your hair provides it with energy that allows the hair to resist this weak chemical attraction, and temporarily allows it to be pulled or pressed into a different shape, such as straightened or more curly. This is a physical change, and doesn't alter the chemical makeup of the hair. However, too much heat can cause the proteins in your hair to Denature, which is a chemical change: a permanent alteration in the makeup of the hair itself. It's the same sort of change change that happens when you cook meat or vegitables; the heat provides enough energy that the chemicals themselves react and change... and in the case of hair, the protein chains can break their old bonds and form new compounds.

Thus, a little heat is okay. Too much heat, and you literally cook your hair, changing it chemically such that it looses its springy, flexible nature.

The proteins in your hair are a repeating sequence. Thus, repetitions of weak, localized H-bonds cause regular curving in otherwise straight hair, IE waves.

I never get to grow it big at all, folks complain to the point I shave just to shut them up. But after striking a deal and as long as I manicure it I can grow the old goatee and moustashe. Its around an Inch long atm...

I had it shoulder long, even though it looked terrible.
Now I have it short, because this is healthier for it (used to have a lot of hair breakage).
