Pilgrims-RTD
« on: September 25, 2010, 04:11:31 am »

I'm a long-time lurker of Bay12 forums, but it is only recently (More or less a month ago) that I found out about the whole forum roleplaying things. I joined a couple of them (well, a couple couple of couple of them to be exact) but I must say I'm sad that so many of them just die for no good reasons. So I'm starting my own, and I promise you I won't let it die!

*Foreword*

In the winter of 1255, three boys were born in Northampton, the sons of three of the town's most skilled craftsmen. Their childhood was a quiet and happy one, and they spent long summer's afternoon exploring the countryside and playing in the street of Northampton. They were known throughout  the shire for stealing apple and playing tricks with farmer's cattle. However, as they aged, their mischief became more and more numerous. By the time they went into apprenticeship, they had such a reputation for brawling and drinking that only their families' relative wealth could secure them a place.

So, when the constable's daughter was found to be pregnant a few month before her wedding with a rich Northwich merchant, they had no choice but to run away. Their families, long-time friends of the parson, manage to strike a deal: if their turbulent offspring were to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, they would be forgiven. Otherwise, the constable would be free to act as he please, with potential gruesome consequences.

So here we are, the 5th of June 1271, as you are kissing your family goodbye before a long and potentially fatal voyage to the other side of the world.

Yeah, it's okay. I just don't think sleeping bags existed back then, so you may end up with a blanket instead.

I'll let this thread run until tomorrow morning (I'm in GMT+1) and then select the characters. Also, don't think major items are restricted to tools or weapons, if you want a pig or some kind of jewelry, feel free to do so.

Ah, and I'm not a native English speakers either, so feel free to correct my English as well as my historical mistake.

Okay, since nobody else posted, here we go. I must say I was hoping for more "city folks" character (You were supposed to be the scions of relatively well-off craftsmen after all), but it'll do. The exception is tomas1297's character. A professional hunter just won't do, hunting was no more than a leisure or an additional sources of proteins by that time. Except if you manage to find evidence that professional hunter were common, I'll have to refuse that one. I'll consider your spot open for now, so if someone else come with a nice character he can have it.

Also, parts in italics are historical details that are there mostly for educational purpose. You may also notice your money is now expressed in pounds and shillings rather than crowns, that is because the crown was not introduced until 1544.

5th June 1271 - St Boniface
Northampton:

You stand just outside of the northern gate of Northampton. It may sound an odd choice given that the Holy Land is south of there, but the area around the South Gate is full of Jew (They were thrown out in 1277) and it's bad luck to go that way. On your left, workmen are finishing to rebuild a section of the wall that was destroyed by the St Andrews monks to allow Henry III to invade the town in the Battle of Northampton (1264). After waving a last goodbye to your family, you ready yourself to go. Just as you finish packing your belongings, you notice a weeping maiden on top of the walls. Before you can recognize her however, she go away.

You think about going to see who she is, but the sight of the Constable's men at the door deter you: the rules are clear, if you step inside's the town's limits before accomplishing your pilgrimage, you shall be at his mercy.

Where do you go?

Remaking character then.

Profession:Fisherman
Description:He is pretty high and athletic. He has short, messy black hair. His eyes are dark blue.He stays cold and logical most of the time.He is a perfectionist. He is slow to trust others. He prefers to take important decisions himself.
Elaborate background:I'll skip this.
Equipment:Simple linen trousers(worn),cow leather tunic(worn),3 days worth of rations,copper gutting knife,5 crowns,fishing net,blanket,small cooking pot.

Action:We should probably go east.Long term goal is reaching Essex through Cambridge since that's the closest way to the sea.Be on the lookout for a village.

Okay, Fisherman's okay. Keep in mind you're all pretty inexperimented 16-years old tough. Also, long-term goal is to reach Jerusalem, not Cambridge. :p
