In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

It shows up in the second half of the last month of the season, as opposed to 40d, when it was the first month.

Ok, I should only lose my woodcutter to starvation, then. My friendless woodcutter.

Fishing? Plant gathering? Hunting?

I dunno about hunting really, I haven't found it to be quite as effective in .12. Plant gathering is a pretty solid fallback though.

Unless you're in the desert. Or tundra. Or glacier.

How are either of those reasons for not plant gathering?  This isn't 40d, you can get plant filled caverns everywhere.  (except in worlds with no cave water, and  aquifer areas preventing cavern access).

What if the caverns have... things in them? GCS, elk birds, etc.

Alternatively, what if they're completely flooded? This has happened to me in the past.

Normally the elk birds end up eating unprepared dwarf lung.

Elk birds are pretty much pansies.  Sure, they'll take out completely unprepared haulers, but even equipping some random dwarf with some crappy equipment should be more than enough to take out elk birds.  Plus, they run from real combat.

In 31.12 with the default dwarves I task the fish cleaner/fisherdwarf with catching fish and hunting (and built a pair of crossbows as soon as I get underground).  I normally end up getting kills faster than the butcher can process the bodies.

Between that, fishing and plant gathering, drinks are all I've had to worry about (lost one dwarf to thirst on my current fort because water froze a month earlier than I was anticipating, literally 30 seconds before I was planning to punch a hole into the wall separating my moat/cistern from the brook :-\).  Luckily, if you have sufficient barrels, planet gathering fixes that problem as well.

Zepave Dawnhogs the Butterfly of Vales the Marsh Titan ... was taken out by a single novice axedwarf and his pet war kitten. Long Live Domas Etasastesh Adilloram, slayer of the snow butterfly!
Doesn't quite have the ring of heroics to it...
