Did you leave out children work rate on purpose?

It's been a while since I read 1984, and I wasn't sure if they had child labour or not.

Nope. How would one 'win' DF?

You don't. It's like 'The Game'. You don't win, just lose eventually.

Howeverrrr, if you can defeat the demonic hole from an adamantine vein, and face it off for 10 in-game years, then considerably, you won the game.

If you start as the last 7 dwarves in the world and build up a thriving dwarven settlement deep underground with hundreds of dwarves, then I'd say you win the game, too.

Until you keep getting mandates for glass on a map with no sand and a dwarf with many friends gets a fatal hammering and there's a tantrum spiral and someone kill your king and....

If I was going to make a 1984-style game, I'd have it be like all my other projects: you have stats that keep track of your empire, and the game would be a glorified  Choose-Your-Own-Adventure, with desicions based on hypotethical 1984-style situations.

If you are winning or losing the war, you automatically lose the game. If you are losing the war, you get conquered. If you are winning the war, your soldiers find out the truth about your regime (they get to actually be in contact with the regime they just conquered and realize, yes, they live exactly the same lives that you do), and thus turn their guns on you.

The goal of the game is not to conquer the world, but to survive and make connections (and even commit a few thoughtcrimes) so that you can ferret out The Truth about your family and recover personal mementos that survived the constant history purges.

Here's some basic stuff (I'm very open to criticism).

Has lots of potential to become a micro-management hell. Ockham razor is needed direly, I think.

Can't see how it will tick so far. Nothing difficult to implement, although.

Gimme some basic chunks of content and I'll start coding. Screens, buttons, options. The more basic - the better.

@Servant Corps:

Programming-wise that'd be a very easy project. But needs lots of content. More than any freeware project is going to get.

If the territories are kept to a large enough size, then there will not be too many, hopefully. Failing that, if the option to apply the same instructions to multiple territories is an option, that can allow for easy large-scale management.

Mock-ups of screens will follow later today (I have quite a bit of work to do before uni).

That's true.

I would prefer a 1984 game or a Fahrenheit 451 game (Imagine playing a fireman.)

Bradbury does have his fans: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1IxOS4VzKM

So I won't make it freeware.  :-\

Here's a mock-up of a hypothetical world map screen, though keep in mind that my MS paint skills are very limited.

Spoiler: map (click to show/hide)

Good enough after I ascii-ize it (although we might need to merge some of those territories if we'll find out there are too many).

Now we need some gameplay interface mock-ups :). Text-based ones will do, we may worry about the layout later.

i wonder if 1984 had some influence on that Gone With the Blastwave comic.  or maybe its just a common idea, i think they had similar power blocks in OGRE.

Here's a mockup of the territory screen (or part of it). Once again, it's not very pretty, and I would invite anyone who would like to to have a go at a better-looking one.

Spoiler: territory view (click to show/hide)
