The probes require more resources and can only really increase in numbers over a larger time frame then we want to be acting within. Maybe once we've dealt with the Not-Blobs, but until then we need short term defences.

Not for the initial construction of them, which with FTL drives and the like won't be cheap resource wise. Also they have to get to another solar system first (pretty fast with FTL, but still have to find a suitable one), not to mention how you suggested they start unarmed, so they'd have to make weapons and then travel back again before they would be any use. And since their numbers start so much lower they couldn't increase their numbers very much compared to the legion, until we run out of resources on planet.

The Athena Destroyers already have solar panels. You add robot manufacturing capabilities to the factories aboard the Athena Destroyers. You decide that making the Athena Destroyer much largers would be stupid, uneconomical and unefficient.

I was kidding anyway, though I did do that in a similar roleplaying game and the aftermath was pretty amusing.
