[CONTEST] DF Masters 3.5: Indiana Jreengus, and...
« on: September 24, 2010, 05:44:48 am »

It's been a while since I ran one of these, and this idea's been percolating in my brain for some time now, so without further ado I bring you:

DF Masters 3.5: Indiana Jreengus, and...

Past DF Masters Competitions:
DF Masters 1
DF Masters 2

Contestants: (6/16)
- Brisk
- Urist Imiknorris
- barconis
- Deadbeard
- cappstv
- Nevyn
-

Judges: (2/8)
- nuker w
- Aramco
-

Overview:
This contest will consist of two stages: The first, in the fine tradition of past DF Masters Competitions, will pit competitors indirectly against one another in a order to build the best Dwarf Fortress, while sticking to certain codes of conduct and gameplay challenges. The second stage is a new addition, and will consist of each contestant (and Judge) guiding a Kobold Adventurer through their opponent's Fortress, to seek out the secrets, collect the artifacts, and overcome the challenges created by their competitors in Stage 1.

Each contestant will be scored based on how fine a Fortress they've built (as rated by a panel of volunteer Judges), how well they overcome the challenges of their opponent's Fortresses, and how many of the Judges are able to overcome their own Fort's challenges in Adventure Mode. As with all the other DF Masters, the winners will recieve all kinds of bragging rights, as well as a little pixelated medal for you to bling out your forum signitures with. What's not to like?

Details:
The theme for this contest is simple, though how you go about is entirely up to you. For Stage 1, contestants will be given a pre-generated world in which to build their Fortress. The Fortresses will be designed to contain challenges, artifacts, or secrets of their choosing, be it within a forgotten city, a sprawling subterranean temple, a puzzle-filled dungeon, or anything else. The only guidelines for designing your fortress are that each will be scored on (and thus must include) at least 3 Aspects related to any of the following:

a) The Legend
b) The Secret
c) The Trial
d) The Guardian
e) The Treasure

Each of these Aspects must be tied to something physical in or about your Fortress, though you may interpret the categories however you wish. You may designate anywhere up to 5 Aspects of your fort to these categories if you wish, and can alternatively designate more than one aspect of your Fort to a single category (ex. 2 Guardians, and 1 Trial). In either case, you only score points for the 3 highest-scoring Aspects of your Fort. When you create them, you also must define to the Judges what they are, and what finding/completing/discovering each Aspect entails, since in the next stage, you and your opponents will earn points based on how well others are able to overcome or discover them.

For Stage 2, players and judges will be adventuring as Indiana Jreengus, a Kobold treasure hunter and explorer (ie. thief), who is famous (among Kobolds) for exploring and conquering (ie. surviving) many of the ancient Dwarven Ruins scattered across the land. With only your trusty Iron Scourge, Leather Coat and Cap, and keen wits, you must explore each submitted Fortress to uncover their legends, learn their secrets, and retrieve their treasures... while overcoming any trials and guardians that may stand in your way! You earn points for each opposing Fortress you are able to best within the time limit, and for each Judge who is able to best your own Fortress.

Oh, and you may have noticed the name of the contest itself seems to trail off midway through the title. That's because each competitor will be naming their Fortress so that it completes a title, to become "Indiana Jreengus, and 'The _____ of _____'." Be creative with your Fort's name, since it sets the tone for the challenge... and since the Judge's favorite will earn a chunk of bonus points!

Let's kick this thing off with sign ups. If you're interested in giving this contest a shot as either a Contestant or a Judge, let me know. We'll need plenty of both, so the more the merrier!

I am interested.

What version?

I'm a little unsure how to do stage 2. If we abandon the fort won't everything be messed up? Items scattered everywhere and everything dead?

Due to my computer, well, yea. Sign me up as a judge and i'll think about competing. Small maps and lack of killer FPS water can make forts boring, heh. But yea. I'm fully in as a judge.

I will join when we know what version to play this on considering that Adventure Mode is kinda screwy atm (I think)...

Though what DOES each of the different aspects MEAN???

EDIT: Added in confirmed players, but left out interested parties pending a final decision.

@ Brisk: For many things, abandoning does make them scatter, but there are exceptions. I think there are rules regarding completely sealed chambers... and am fairly certain that any named creature on the site, which is not a current member of your Civ, will remain afterward, and ambush any Adventurers/Reclaimers. Overall, I need to run a few experiments to see what all gets scattered, and what remains stationary after abandoning/crumbling, to come up with simple suggestions and guidelines for the players. If anyone has firsthand experience with such things, feel free to share.

I'm still deliberating over which version to use. My gut wants to use the most recent, since a lot of the new features are conceptually pretty cool, and I'm not sure how badly exploring Dwarven Ruins will be affected by the shortcommings; using it depends on how quickly the new version matures and gets the wrinkles coded out. Another part of me is inclined to hold out, in the vain hope that Ropes/Climbing gets implemented. Yet another part of me wants to roll back to the last major stable release... but somehow that feels undwarven.

@Nevyn: Each of the Aspects is up to you to interpret however you want. For example, The Guardian can be a named resident monster, which the Adventurers must defeat. It could also be a giant stone statue that stands watch over the main gate, or even a hidden sepulcher made of precious metals, which housed the tomb of a fallen Dwarven Warrior who defended the Fortress with his/her life.

@ Urist Imiknorris: Embarks are another point of contention for me. On one hand, I'd like to start everyone off on a level playing field with the same site/embark profile, as with the past DF Masters'. Surprisingly, having players work within the limitations of a certain site tends to encourage creativity. However, I can see the virtues of letting people choose vastly different places to embark in, since that means more diverse animals, geography, and available materials. I'm willing to take the opinions of players into account.

Not being able to see the image is annoying though... I'll try to reupload it to Imageshack rather than Photobucket.
PS. Imik = Chuck. Sneaky. I like.

I will join, pending site size/whether we pick a site/whether I can start to truly grasp the new stuff, even from 0.31.12.

I will throw in that the new stuff from after 40d is all very awesome, and could bring a different feel from previous Dwarf Masters.

I don't understand. I still can't see it. Could you link to a screenshot of it? (I know it's probably not going to be worth it, but I MUST KNOW)

e- In 40d (and probably 31.xx), placing items in bins made of lead (or anything denser) will prevent them from scattering. Items won't leave their containers and the containers are too heavy to move.

If that's correct, that means you can use bins of gold, platinum, electrum, lead, or rose gold.

I would like to be a judge. Also, why do you get points for the judges being able to complete it? I may be missing something, but as long as it isn't impossible, you should make it so no judges get through.

Players earn a lot of points for beating other people's Forts, to encourage them to try and tackle them.
Players earn a few points when Judges complete their own Forts, to discourage them from making them impossible.

How many steps underwater does a Kobold able to make at non title Swimming???
Is the Adventurer the same same Kobold for everyone? And what would be his swimming stat???

Is a Swimmer able to get Oxygen from a single gap of unfilled water that is above a pipe of water through a grate or does it have to be a free movement???

Nevyn: I think they need to have access to the air tile to breath, but tests would be able to prove it conclusively or not.

Also Bunp, now with a poll for your Embark preferences. I'm still keeping an eye on the new DF versions as they come, and they've been rapidly fixing the bugs with the new sprawling Civs; feel free to voice your version preference too, though.
