this keeps bugging me, so I'll ask for advice.

I know that my dwarf, Lorrie, who was supposed to have represented me in The Fatal Ice, has perished. She was only a small child, poor little thing, but that only emphasizes the fact that she is only a corpse now and is listed with that bright 'deceased' tag. I also noticed the 'ghost' story being used to justify a dead dwarf participating in directing the fortress. It has worked, yes, but repeating the same gimmick over is not interesting. Especially if it was impromptu the first time.

But I haven't yet come up with an explanation for how in the world a dead child gets to lead the fort. So...

Any ideas? :D


Make her a lich.  THe fort being ruled by a powerful undead loli who commands through fear would work wonders for morale.

Notes from glowing engravings on a rough ice block wall.

It's cold. Very cold. Or was, actually. For some reason, I seem to have lost contact with my body but I can't tell if I'm dead or not. It's very strange. All I can remember is a hellish face and never-ending screams coming from all around me. It gives me the shivers. But I've seen death before and I know what it feels like being dead. At first it all goes dark and you feel the cold hand of fate embracing you, but it's not the end. Some people believe you'll end up somewhere with your gods or are sentenced to eternal damnation, others think it all ends with the touch of the bony hand of death, but in reality you'll feel the tingling sensation in your body, as though waking up from a long sleep. But this time it's different. It doesn't feel like all the other deaths I've experienced. I feel like I'm lost.

I've died many times before and came back. However, I'm unsure how that works. My last death occurred far away from this world. A fort called Timelances. My body was quite different back then as well. But I was a miner and a damn good one, too. "Last of our kind" was something that a few of my fellow dwarven brethren called us. It was hard for me to understand how that was possible, given that I had no recollection of it. Although, it does explain why we received neither caravans nor migrants in all those lonely years. Not even elves or humans. Only a couple of kobolds and goblins were spotted outside the blood red kaolinite entrance, every once in a blue moon. But something happened, I don't know what. I simply woke up in a completely new world, in some town. Gone was Timelances, gone was my fellow miner colleague. Was I dreaming the whole time?

In front of me lies The Fatal Ice, my tomb I guess. I was nothing but a mere miner again, minding my own business, not really paying attention to the fat cats. Except for Satori, of course. She must've used the cats for they were quite mesmerizing. Perhaps I should have paid more attention to my own wit than I did to the cats. It might have saved me from this limbo. Then again, I don't blame her. Well, maybe a little. But the real hammer should fall upon the Queen. Yes, that narcissistic low brow, shot out from the worst of the worst of the nobility, all of whom most likely wanted me to get here if only to keep me from opening my mouth, from spilling the mouldy beans which have been lurking in their false seat of power for as long as anyone can remember. They probably even knew what was lurking underneath Fatal Ice all along, but refused to tell us due to the damaging information in my mind. I'll get them for this. One day, Queen, I'll get you for this. I must find out how to get my physical form back one way or another.

1st Granite
It seems I can interact with the environment. Somewhat, at least. A small section of the outdoor wall will serve as a good place to write some sort of journal, though I'm uncertain how well it will keep its shape in the current situation. There were a lot more dwarves last time I checked. Maybe that hellish fiend got to them, or maybe the hulking beasts down below. In any case, we don't have the dwarfpower to handle the band of Kobolds hanging around the outskirts. The walls will keep them away, for now.

Speaking of architecture, who in Armok's name was responsible for planning this place? It's a total mess! There's also vomit EVERYWHERE. Seriously, picture your mind having to wade through knee-deep piles of vomit. I'm not sure what happened, but this needs to be dealt with somehow. Who's in charge here? Of course, they can't hear me. Maybe I can affect the mind of one of those useless drunkards to follow my orders? Shouldn't be too hard, given their perpetually drunken state.

Thankfully, they've been smart enough to stock up on supplies after what I'm guessing must've been one big fiery bloodbath full of vomit. I'll need these to attract more bums from town. Maybe improve our reputation. That will require a lot of work though. Perhaps combine it with the enormous amount of caged prisoners and animals. I need to plan further...

I don't care if Grendal said she won't be continuing her role as leader of this fort. You'll obey my orders. That's right, you're mine now. At least until my plans have been carried out. My eyes caught the sight of what appeared to be a hospital in disarray, what with all those rocks there and no patients. Especially considering Shem is lying in bed all busted up. A diplomat's hanging around on top, but I'm not letting him out until I'm certain the Kobolds won't threaten the security of this fort.
I also noticed the wacky pumping system and the lack of large enough farms that won't turn back at us with some disfigured lizard made out of soil. New farms are a top priority. Secondly, there is a lack of a proper dining hall. I'm sure the dwarves are fed up with sitting on barrels, gulping in mouldy weeds and berries with no proper dwarven wine. So I've designated a new farm area to be dug out, and a new pump station, too. Satori's the only one with enough experience in mining so her medical tasks have been taken over by Besmar.

4th Granite

Exilo seems to be kind enough to start cleaning up some of the mess but she keeps screaming about getting blood smears and vomit in hard-to-reach places. Well maybe if you didn't roll around in it like a frolicking pig, then you wouldn't be in your current predicament, now would you, dear noble manager? Stop yapping and get rubbing those floors. They won't clean themselves, you know.

14th Granite
Grendal, stop making booze! We have enough to last us ten years and Exilo needs help dumping all those boulders from the new farm area! No, you don't need to clean yourself again. Get your hairy back and frozen beard down there, now! She's not listening.

18th Granite
What- How- Where did this miasma come from? Did someone forget to designate a refuse stockpile? Or has the Queen sent spies? I need to investigate. And everyone's going mental with those cage traps. Fine, go make a bunch cages to satisfy your cage-needs.

20th Granite
The new pump is fully functional, we just need to clear the area and punch a hole into the lakebed. Then flood the entire area for a nice patch of mud.

23rd Granite
Shem is getting worse every day it seems. While she hasn't had a diagnosis yet, the dwarves claim she still has major bleeding and is quite faint. I fear she won't make it through this year.

24th Granite
Oh now you've decided to talk Mistrum Sedmerossu? Now of all days. By Urist's beard, what have you been doing these last months? No doubt spying on us, looking for a trace of me. Well, you won't find any! I doubt you'll be able to detect my control of Grendal.

11th Slate
I must say, there's something about these dwarves that really goes on my nerves. I don't know what, but it's most likely their habit of slacking around while there's a ton of hauling to be done. Oh look, a snowstorm.

14th Slate
MIGRANTS!!!! At last! And there are males as well! But there are still Kobolds out there! Noo! And the bridge is still retracted! This won't end well.

15th Slate
They are PELTING those migrants with a billion arrows. And no one's willing to lower the bridge.

16th Slate
Thank Armok, the Kobolds have left! Someone pull that lever before the next ambush arrives!

17th Slate
Get out of my face, human. Well, Grendal's face. You know what I mean! Can't you see I'm trying to let some new genetic material into the fort so we don't have to inbreed through spores. "Pleasant place"? Obviously a spy. Yes, get out of here. Now.

18th Slate
A peasant has been taken by a fey mood! And he's outside freezing to death. Why isn't the bridge lowered yet, Grendal? Answer me, please.

It also seems another peasant who received several mortal wounds has decided to take a nap. In a snowstorm. He gave up that quickly, huh? Really shows the kind of image this fort gives to the outside world.

20th Slate
Ast has claimed a craftdwarf's workshop. He better make something expensive. We really need the boost. I think some of the migrants are contemplating on whether or not they should enter the fort. They've been standing there in the snow planning suicide for all I know. At least it's comforting to know that the town has the decency to send 4 dwarves with medical skills. One of them is a high master wound dresser and suturer! Besmar, you're off hospital duty. The newcomers should start working on the 4 wounded dwarves lying in the beds and snow.

I've also formed The Scorching Attics, our new militia defence force led by Tun, the hunter.

Something has to be done with this zombie polar bear. It's filling the entire stockpile with miasma.

21st Slate
Looks like the migrants outside decided to join up with the rest of us. That, or just use our facilities to warm themselves. Then go back to their shenanigans.

It appears to me that all of our magma smelters are not fully built. This needs to be rectified. I've sent down our newly acquired armorer to fix this, right away.

24th Slate
Ast has begun a mysterious construction! Hurry, the suspense is killing me.
Still no signs of recovery for Shem. She's suffering from moderate blood loss now, too.

1st Felsite
And it seems Ast has finished his construction; a dog bone grate, worth 1200 bucks. Yay. It doesn't even have any engravings or bands of anything. Not even spikes. It's just a simple grate that got rocketed to legendary status. The gods are mocking me.

5th Felsite
Is there some sort of disease running in the deer herd? Tun told me he saw half of them throwing up. That must explain the enormous amount of vomit on the surface.
As the farm nears completion, I've initiated the construction of the new dining hall. It's going to take a while until it's finished, though.

14th Felsite
Farms are up and running, ready to pump out dwarven shrooms and wheat for delicious booze and will provide us with cloth and dye for our industry. We may never need to depend on the elves again!

18th Felsite
Elves are here. We have no real need for these elves right now as our stockpiles are quite full. I'm thinking of screwing around with them, however, we aren't ready for a full-scale war with only 4 militiadwarves. Of course, having merchants means kobolds or goblins are around, or so I've heard.

20th Felsite
It doesn't matter to me if someone will feel a bit upset when I convert most of the empty space in the mass graveyard into temporary stockpiles for weapons, armor and ammo that has been left in the trade depot. There's also a new furniture stockpile as the previous one is crammed with thousands of mechanisms. Someone must've been preparing for a fully fledged war. With traps.

22nd Felsite
I knew it. A kobold master thief was spotted by the Wood Burner. Keep an eye out for more thieves and invaders, Bomrek.

Blast! The wood burner thought it was a good idea to cross the bridge as it retracted. Now he's lying unconscious in the moat with a broken arm and a bunch of internal bruises. And he's nauseous.
WHEN KOBOLDS ARE IN THE VICINITY.

I got Grendal to take a peek at the trade depot. The elves have BEARS. GRIZZLY BEARS. Get some trade items over there!

26th Felsite
Thief! A thief has stolen 35 steel bolts! Not sure if it was ours, but there are thieves around nonetheless! And an iron battle axe was stolen. Time to move in the militia. Grendal, you know what to do. I'm starting to think the thief's stealing from the battlefield, though. Clever bastard.

27th Felsite
And more thefts. Sigh.

30th Felsite
Summer's approaching and I feel like I've accomplished a lot as nothing more than a mere spirit thingy. Not sure what. One thing's certain, though. Grendal is starting to nag. See, she's been asking a lot of questions. A lot of them. So I feel like switching. I've learned during my time here to control myself, maybe even create a long-time possession of one of the dwarves. This Cog, a mechanic around here, does have quite a weak mind. I figure I might be able fully take control of him, if only to get away from Grendal. I just hope this will work. And then I can get back to work and back to finding a way to get revenge on the Queen. Yes... Revenge...

Exilo has an infection.

Migrants, Armok be praised finally some working power for this fort. If the next player does not decide to reopen our little fun village below the magma see and our current ghost who engraves ice walls stays on his course this fatality of a fortress could recover.

Seeing as the kobolds can steal items outside worth around a million bucks we'll soon have the little buggers ambushing us frequently. Can they end up sieging like goblins if they make enough money or is it only ambushes?

I pierced hell and almost killed the fort.
Then my antivirus and several other progams ate the CPU and everything crashed and hell not only CHANGED SHAPE, but all the demons disappeared off the map but are listed as "deceased"

That... was fun. Fun watching Grendal shouting at thin air, asking where I'd gone. I'm not sure how Cog's doing, though. He might have had a mental meltdown and not the screaming lunatic kind. That's the only explanation I can give for his quite mind. Not a word from him at all. No matter how strange it may seem, though, I have a need for a body. Both for the sake of this fortress and for the sake of my ongoing quest against the false dwarven regime. And for those purposes, I managed to have Grendal make Cog in charge, or should I say Argoth II but no one knows of this. Only four of Fatal Ice's inhabitants knew me before my death and they would probably end up at a mental institute or feel the weight of the hammer before they manage to spread the word of my "reinstatement" into Fatal Ice.

1st Hematite
I don't know who came up with this idea, but some of the dwarves around here said they felt they had been treated unfairly. That they weren't "given the respect" they "rightfully deserve". So then I had a bunch of dwarves gathering around me, waving wildly pints of precious booze and spilling it all over the vomit and blood. I was quite surprised not one of them had managed to slip and crack their head. They probably wouldn't be missed.

With barrels of seeds turned over, I managed to barricade myself into a corner of the seed storage room. The dwarven shoutings could still be heard through the rock door and solid wall. I had to come up with something or they would have killed me. So I came up with the best I could. A way for them to gain their "respect and honor". That way was nothing more than drunken arm wrestling. Obviously amputees were out of luck, but whoever could win a match against the strongest person we had around here, that is miner Satori, would be given a name on the newly created Naming Day, the 1st day of every season. I was pretty sure Satori gave in to easily to some people. Long story short, Zasit the armorer, Tun the militia commander, Likot the engraver and Kogan the wrestler got some new names. Are you happy now?

Those nauseous deer outside are really starting to annoy me with their vomit. The Scorching Attics have been deployed to neutralize the problem.

3rd Hematite
Yes, go chase them around the map and let them spew more vomit from their nauseous intestines. I'm sure you'll get the job done sometime this snowy summer. I hope you don't mind me putting you on cleaning duty later on. I just need to go speak to the manager for a few - AMBUSH! Cancel that order! Eliminate that Kobold spearman! Everyone get inside! What in Urist's beard are you doing out there Inod?!

Now the Kobold's nauseous? Do the gods have some sort of fetish for vomit?

4th Hematite
The Kobold must've gone into hiding in a pile of vomit somewhere. I can't see where he's gone. The militia's never there to handle the problem either; they're too busy punching the nauseous deer, making it even more nauseous. Come on...

9th Hematite
The deer are still alive but given the probability for a new ambush I had to order the drunken buffoons back inside. We need the dwarfpower to get enough trade goods so we can get that grizzly bear, possibly even a few black bears. The bridge is also retracted. Any ambush or siege we get won't make it inside. Unless they can fly. May the gods have mercy on us.

It also appears to me that Grendal is nauseous. Great.

12th Hematite
By the will of my neatly combed beard, that polar bear is getting out of that stockpile. Surely it's the miasma which is making people sick. If that wasn't bad enough, it appears as if the deers have brought FRIENDS. They're ALL vomiting.

13th Hematite
Well crap. Some idiot managed to get a wooden item through quality control. Now the elves are acting all high and mighty, refusing to trade based on their idiotic beliefs. I guess that means only one thing. "Dwarves, seize those animals. And the other stuff as well." See what you did there, elves? If it weren't for your horrendous eco-fascist ideology, you would have at least left with your goods intact. Stolen worth? About 20000 bucks. What a heist.

Damn. I guess we need to work harder on our image. If only we could get all this blood and vomit away. That should constitute a sharp rise in immigration. For now, we have to make due with the new dining hall which is taking its pretty time being built. Or dug out, to be precise.

18th Hematite
It has come to my attention that there aren't enough coffins around for the deceased. The mass graveyard still has unburied bodies lying around. I hope I can get someone to get around building them some stone boxes. If not, I'll need to find some way of cremating them.

20th Hematite
At this time, I think I'll just have someone brew full time. I know we have a lot of booze already, but we might see some more migrants this year. I'm getting worried, though. I overheard Taggan talking about some major beer party. And we dwarves are capable of drinking several kegs a person a day. More booze also equals more drunken behavior. This means a higher risk of someone knocking down a wall, letting the fireman in to set all of our alcohol-covered bodies ablaze. And the booze. And the bears. And hopefully the deer. I can only hope...

Eshtan, the bowyer, is pretty much useless and Satori needs all the help she can get digging out the dining hall. "Congratulations, Eshtan. You're our new miner. Grab this pick and get digging. And don't worry about cave-ins; they are very rare around these parts. Especially with Satori around. She can even tell when not to pierce the underworld. So you're in quite good hands." She's also been bugging me lately, complaining about the lack of chairs. Just a few more months, darling, and you'll be swimming in chairs.

7th Malachite
It has come to my attention that our stockpiles are starting to reach their max capacity. Inod, our high master carpenter, has been given the "honorable" task of creating loads of bins and barrels. Seriously, we have full stockpiles both inside and outside.

9th Malachite
I've seen no sign of recovery for Shem. I'm afraid I'll have to upgrade her status to vegetable. She was only eating up our supplies, after all. Now, if we ever were to run out of food we'll have something to cook.

12th Malachite
The dining hall has finally been dug out. Now to smooth and engrave. The miners will now be working on clearing the smelting area downstairs.

And we now got a screaming, naked, elven lunatic with a suicidal mule in the fort. I thought I let you go home? Didn't you get the memo or something?

13th Malachite
Miners are being lazy and are refusing to haul coke bars. I swear, if those bars aren't hauled to the stockpile on the floor above you when I get down there, I'll make sure to have some big dwarf with a hammer give you two a spanking.

20th Malachite
Given the miners incompetence in hauling a few coke bars, they've been repurposed to carve out some proper bedrooms. This will hopefully attract some much desired migrants to this fort.

This is Vabok Ancientceiling. She's a kitten and Zefon Aranrakust's pet. She's currently outside in the cold and harsh summer terrain testing out her paws after some time in the relatively warm inside of Fatal Ice. Isn't she adorable? Yes, she is to any low brow dwarf or dwarfwoman. Especially the Queen. To me, though, she's nothing more than a saboteur operating on that tyrant's order. Why, you might ask? Because she's nauseous. And because she has this strange bead on her. It reeks of darkness. But I can be merciful. I'll let this kitten live, if she's willing to be a double agent. Whenever I get the chance, this kitten will be told to sneak out of the fortress and head back to the capital. It will be difficult, of course. I don't speak the kitty language. But I'm pretty sure I can affect her just enough to get the point across. And then somehow find out what's been going on over there if she survives the return trip. I must find a way to get that information from her.

28th Malachite
The pace of the detailing of the dining hall is slow. Much too slow. If this is going to be finished before we get assassins here, we'll need more workers to smooth the rock. Therefore, I've appointed Erush Uzolesmul and Dumed Ralsefol to engravers. The sooner you get that dining hall finished, the better.

13th Galena
Humans are here to trade finally. They took their damn time. Now let's see what you have for us.
"Lower the bridge! But keep everyone insi- Actually, cancel that order! It's an ambush!"

And another one. The diplomat's doomed, but the caravan might make it through. Those bloody goblins and human mercenaries will pay for this one day. Along with the Queen. I bet she's coordinating these attacks right now.

Oh look, a goblin master thief trying to get away with one of our children. IF WE HAD ANY.

You have got to be joking. There's ANOTHER ambush. Screw it, that caravan's doomed. We're just going to sit on our hairy bums on this patch of ice and wait out these annoying creatures. We can sustain ourselves. Somewhat.

Against all odds, the diplomat has managed to survive the first wave. I guess running away and lying in the snow unconsciously does have its benefits. But we're not letting him inside.

And the caravan's dead. Good luck diplomat, it's been nice knowing you. From far away. Behind safe walls. Alive.

21st Galena
So I was just casually walking down the hallway, you know, looking for something to quench my frosty thirst. Well, Cog's thirst. Anyway, on my way to the liqour storage room I hear some disturbing noises. Mumbling noises. It was creepy. I took a quick look at the direction from where the noises were heard. They came from the mass graveyard. Now it was really worrisome. Fearing we might have some people rising up from the dead, I grabbed an axe and headed towards the graveyard with Talmurr. What we found was... disturbing. To me, at least. The only one we saw there was the chief medical dwarf.
"By Urist's beard, what has he been doing there?! Actually, how long has he been there?" Talmurr asked.
When we asked chief medical dwarf Kosoth, he just stood there, gave us no answer and simply stared into the void. Then he walked down the hallway, took the stairs one floor down and stood around in the dark craftdwarf's workshop. Then continued to walk, like a timeless spirit inhabiting the husk of a mindless person, and started to haul a few objects to the workshop. Some leather, bronze bars, magnetite and more, we didn't know why he did that. Once he scratched the last item off from his imaginary list, he just stood there in the workshop once more. Then he started to mutter nonsense, seemed concentrated or fixed on some divine task.
"Odgubtizot... Desis... Atir..." he repeatedly mumbled. Talmurr tried to talk some sense into that guy, but no cigar.
Shortly afterwards, like a hypnotised elf doing his master's bidding, he grabbed some tools and started to work. Talmurr and I left. We didn't want to know what kind of demonic horror that dwarf wanted to unleash upon us.
Now he's in there, working determinedly. He gives me the creeps.

24th Galena
An ambush! Near the diplomat. Surely he'll be dead after this. I was surprised he had survived this long. He must be blessed by the gods or something. That or this is all a play by the Queen to make him look innocent. Either way, we're still not letting him in. He'll only draw those kobolds closer to our gate.

And another ambush. Two in a row. The Queen seems to go to extreme lengths to make sure we fall for her tricks. We're not falling for it, your royal lowness.

Yep, he's dead now.

And the thieves are here, once more stealing from the dead on the battlefield. Don't they have a Queen to steal from? All we have here is crap and vomit. The Queen's castle is where the fame and valuables are at. Go away. Shoo!

See this? This is what we need, some good migrant-bringing artifacts. It's not much but it's damn more than a plain dog bone grate. Total worth: 48000 bucks. Well done, Kosoth. Or whoever it was that made that thing. I don't want to know.

1st Limestone
Six months has passed since I returned. During this time, we hadn't really expanded that much, only enough to get this place back up and running at full steam. The dining hall was getting finished at a reasonable speed, but I'm still unsure if we'll be able to finish it this year. The bedrooms will have to wait till next year, though. I might be able to finish digging them out but any post-smoothing and engraving is a far fetch. All other work has been basically just hauling crap all over the place and cleaning up the vomit with whatever we can find.

Now, once again, we are surrounded by kobolds, those greedy bastards. Our militia isn't strong enough to handle them, but I've planned a barracks for them so they can train. It will most likely be finished in autumn if it's done quickly. Otherwise we'll have to wait until the cold and harsh winter comes by before we can train the Scorching Attics.

The trading has failed utterly. Whoever missed that wooden item is getting to have is back shaved by the grizzly bear. We could have kept a stable, if only mediocre, trade relation and now we're risking war. Even worse when those elven merchants apparently forgot the bridge was open and are now running lunatics. I can't get a single good night's sleep even when I'm several feet below them. The humans are also going to be pissed. First their caravan gets bombarded with arrows, and then their diplomat succumbs to a kobold swordswinger. If we survive the next five years, I'll be damned amazed.

Vabok, the double agent kitten, is on her way to the capital. I don't know what dangers may be on her path, but she must succeed. In the meantime, I'll need to meditate to find a way to translate the kitty language. I hope she understood the directions I gave her.

OOC: Sorry I'm late. It takes a while to do one season when running at <30fps (which dips down to 0-5 fps during combat) and also write a somewhat creative story. I couldn't get any work done yesterday as well when there's a maths exam the next day. I hope you don't mind if the update gets posted during some awkward time of the day (it's still 9:23 pm over here, GMT+2)
Anyway, no migrants and only four dorfings. Meto30, at the time of the dorfing I wasn't sure if you wanted your dwarf's name to be House, medical dwarf or not. Let me know if you want that changed.
