Make oral tradition turn history into actual legends
« on: September 24, 2010, 04:41:13 am »

"This relates to the killing of a lion by the human hunter Nato in the year 56"

So almost one millenium ago, some uninteresting guy killed one of thousands of lions, and the dwarves even know the exact year. How do they know that? There is no gigantic library in the wagon, so I assume oral tradition.

Now how about oral tradition turning into actual legends, as it would in real life? Like the "a long time ago, in a land long forgotten, the human hunter Nato the Great killed the giant lion Ulan and used his skin to become invincible, then he married the king's daughter and became king himself later."

Or, instead of "forgotten beast x killed 143 humans in 342" make it "killed a thousand men long ago" and so on.

So my suggestion is: Make history more fantastic, exaggerated and overall blurred the longer it dates back. Let the dwarves have exact numbers of, say, everything that happened in the last 100 years, but then insert more and more estimates, mistakes, overstatements and inaccuracy, until we have a time full of unbelievable heroes an epic deeds in the years 0-100.

Don't alter the actual history, just how the dwarves see and engrave it.

Hmm.. I guess it would make discovering history in Adv mode more interesting. (atm, it's about as interesting as taking a survey of how many grapes people had for breakfast)

Maybe also let winners alter history, like make up some evil deed that caused a war.

What would you make up about elves, though?

"They eat babies!"

Apparently having a redundant creature entry causes the game to say, "Oh, look, it's crazy world now. Nothing makes sense! Alligators live in houses!"

Therein lies the difficultly of the propaganda. They already eat people, what more can you say to disparage their image?

Elves don't actually eat people, it's just dwarven propaganda.

Calm down Urist, he was suggesting something Legends would say if the elves won the war.

So you can nuke the world from the orbit just after.

what about the historical event remains logged as is, but the displaying in the "dwarf interpretation" leads to the history known about it

for example, guyA killed lionB in yearC

reforms in the dwarf interpretation (what shows up on wall carvings, etc etc) to more and more faboulous encounters untill it turns into a fairy tale like story the more years (decennia, milennia) pass

Goblin history would be like this:

"In X, the goblin child snatcher Y rescued Z from the abusive dwarfs"

While dwarven history would be more like this:

"In X, the evil goblin child snatcher Y stole Z from his home without mercy!"

That's what I think should happen, some races should lie about what happened in an event and some should tell the truth.
