Does item add-ons improve equipment quality?
« on: September 23, 2010, 11:19:02 pm »

For example a -Short Sword- versus a

=<-short Sword->=

with like menacing spikes of troll bone and hanging rings of dragon leather?

I had my war chief (millitia commander) just beast three ambushes at once with his "upgraded" sword.

Now ive never ever had any good results with battles before so my guess is yes. Can anyone confirm?

I don't think it's the decorative items themselves, more the forging quality. Logically the better forged the sword is, the better it is in combat. Of course i could also be completely wrong, in which case just ignore my insane babbling.

The user is pretty beast himself

Legendary shield user = immortal on the battlefield

anyway the weapon in question seems to not cut very well and seems to blunt things to death while stabbing seems to sever off hands.

the quality of the decorative items makes sense.

I've not seen definitive tests but conventional wisdom is that it doesn't affect anything. If your dwarf who wields it is that good, then the exact forging quality of the weapon is less relevant compared to its material and his skill.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Can you change item quality and decor in arena mode? If so this would be easily testable.

I THINK, but don't quote me on this, that increasing the amounts of stuff you put on it would increase the weight, slightly, which would give it a small advantage for blunt weapons?
not sure though
and toady intends to implement decorative spikes on weapons (or gauntlets? brass knuckles =D) being useful sometime in the distant future

"Features before functionality" is the mantra here.  Add in the features now, and then make them useful at a later date!

yeah, screw those people who think something should have a purpose in favor of implementing MOAR stuff without purpose
anyone who thinks differently shouldn't be playing DF

yeah it adds weight for sure.

so more force in weapon swing so ya.

I agree the coolness factor is better than functionality.

A sword with an image of goblins being struck down in goblin bone? fuck yeah!

"what purpose does this serve?"
