1st Granite - 16th Felsite, 3nd Journal Entry of Un67 Oltarsemor, Overseer

Now that we've arrived, I immediately told Zaik to begin cutting down some of the trees in the area. I admit this is very un-dwarflike, but I truly find some of the highwoods in the area majestic, and it's a bit painful to watch them cut down.

Meanwhile, Trooper0102 immediately began fishing in the brook over here, and I told him to stay in one area as not to stay too much. It's very close to a waterfall, it's quite a scenic spot and should provide a fair deal of joy to him.

I then told the miners Onol (OOC: Untaken so far, reserved for Xenos should he want him) and Painiac to begin digging out some earth to have a rough area to stockpile some items inside before doing too much else. Luckily for us, there seems to be a lovely vein of limonite in the area, which will be wonderful for making metal, as well as some gems.

And here are the results of our hard labor:

We then dug down and prepared a plan for some bedrooms, a dining room and space for workshops that don't need to be close to the surface...

Spoiler: My Plan (click to show/hide)

... but I forgot that I'm digging right below a murky pool. Ah well, it does not hamper us too much. The fact that coal and magnetite is so abundant here MORE then makes up for it. All we need for steel is flux, and marble should not be too far down...

Spoiler: My Big Mistake... (click to show/hide)

And I then dug out some room for other stockpiles.

Spoiler: Other Stockpiles (click to show/hide)

(OOC: That concludes this journal, which was something of a nightmare for me, since I usually don't dig anything big... I think I did pretty bad so far, but who am I to know?)

Looks nice. Stockpiles in sand=win, any stones lying everywhere. You can try to use aquaifer to get mud on our farms, putting floodgate and channeling from higher z-level maybe will do a trick. In my humble opinion, I would move bedrooms elsewhere.

If you may, post picture of actual region. You had post localization of our region on world map, but there isn't picture how it looks. Or I am mistaken?

What are you gonna do with the stone once your miners reach legendary?
queue a load of doors/coffins/chests/mechanisms/blocks?

It's probably made from baby bone, with a handle of baby leather. Probably uses the leg bones wound together for the handle, the pelvis for the handle/pick joint, and the pick is the spine.

But that's all in theory, of course. Not like I've made a pick out of my own 5 month old baby before.

I think I might move the bedrooms one or two z-levels down, but I'll have to make due with what I have for now.

As for the stone, expect stone mugs. Lots and lots of stone mugs. I'll export a picture of the region later.

Well, setting stonecrafter guy/guys to making crafts repeatedly and masons to blocks works. Crafts can be dumped on merchants, and they will be overjoyed with this; and blocks don't take so much space. Crafts, like blocks, are also put in bins. And making some furniture for nobles in advance is also good idea.

And, I have impression from your reply that miners dig out more stons on higher level. Didn't they only works faster?

Nope, I've tested the miner level thing myself. The dig AND leave more stone, faster.

Yes, higher mining level = increased dig speed, decreased chance of not leaving stone. High masters and above don't leave blank tiles unless its soil.

Dunno, let's give him another day and then you or Xenos can just start a new fort by the same name or something.

If he would post save of his location, we could do it. But we don't have that. So, we can only wait :/

You need flux stone, an aquifer is bad, and we might want a river. Magma is nice but not necessary. (We have to learn how to make dwarven superweapons SOMEHOW, dont we?)

heck, we could always take that one spot from the first page of the world gen cookbook thread. Had limestone, a brook, a volcano, and 10k of the blue stuff.

lemme see if i can find the seed for it, sec.
