Pumping magma 120 z-levels up...

...surely kills my FPS. Or is this not the pumping itself, but the moving of magma within the magma sea?

Probably both. I've not had such an experience myself, but I've heard that moving fluids is detrimental to FPS. Pumps, too, probably due to the former.

It's the magma sea shifting combined with the spreading out of magma at the top of the stack. You could try this instead if you'd like your lag to be concentrated in a single event.

Oh, the magma piston. A dwarfier solution to magma woes does not exist.
