hey all. Like you all know there are a lot of fun to have with water in DF. At the moment Im playing on a map that has no river, and I really like how the fortess turned out. (I searched for a river on embark, but couldnt find one without also having an aquifier)

So, I wonder if it possible to get a constant flow of water (for waterfalls, toilet traps etc.) even if I dont have a river? Any underground pools with flow from the edge of the map or something?

if you're not against using dfhack, you can turn on rain permanently, and then just link up all your murky pools
slow, but it works

you can exploit perpetual motion generators, look it up on the wiki or

If you have an aquifer, the only problem is getting rid of the water. Otherwise you have a great source. especially if you have a spot where the aquifer drops a level.

I've never actually embarked with a river.  Ever.  I've only ever had brooks.  Brooks seem to work just fine for my modest needs.

If one of your caverns has water, try to map it out and see whether the water reaches the edge of the map.  If it does, then you have an infinite supply of water -- "just" pump it up from there to wherever you need it.

Gotta tell you up front, though -- a brook's a whole lot easier....

From my experience at least half of the caverns have water that touches the edge of the map. In fact I'd say any cavern that has water has it touching the edge of the map. A quick and easy way to get water flowing is to have it come from one cavern and dump into another, preferably into water. I did this before and it worked pretty well.

I always set water in caverns to a minimum 20, maximum 30. Even if you don't mess with the params though, your caverns should at least have some water in them.

Why does everybody hate aquifers?  :(

thanks for all the tips :) Guess I'll be searching for an underground pool. Guess I'll have to build some windmills to pump it up.

Pah!  I conquered aquifers on my first try, and have managed to reclaim over 70% of the flooded regions of my fortress with my elite team of swimming masons.

Ok, I see your point, but once you dig through the aquifers, you're pretty much fine.  Of course you have to know how to do that...

You would need to use pumps powered by windmills to carry water up a water slide that refills back into the pump's supply.  This is the perpetual motion device.

But no matter how skilled you are it's still possible to flood your entire... world, by making a mistake.
