Enemy animals...
« on: September 21, 2010, 11:50:43 pm »

(31.12) I recently was sieged by the humans and ended up with a bunch of caged Giant Lions. Is it possible to tame/train enemy beasts (or mod this in, as I would love it)? If not, what other cool things could I do with such critters?

I thought about dumping them into a pit for my champions to fight, but that just seems vanilla...

edit: To clarify, they are the War Giant Lions the humans were using as mounts.

In my experience taming invading animals will give them a (Tame) tag, however they will be no less hostile and will occasionally bug out if you try to throw them down a hole in the floor and not go in the hole, instead deciding to eat your civilians.

Don't know about lion, but I tamed tons of VCC, Jabberers, etc from goblin sieges. No issues.

edit: VCC, mah bad.

Goblins riding the Gnu C Compiler would seriously freak me out.

I tried training war animals (got no such animal message) but that's probably doing it wrong. I'll try taming them tonight. Failing that, I'll either pit them for axe practice or dump them in the volcano with their masters.

Ah, crawlers, the giant voracious cave kind.

Goblins Programmers riding mounts such as these would be fearsome indeed. Quick, axe off their dependencies!

i wouldn't risk those kittens in the legendary dining room, but their offspring should be fine. they might not breed if not tame or at all though, not sure.

We know you can "farm" wild animals (mermaids, unicorns, elephants) and they will reproduce in "captivity." I guess the question is, will trained war animals breed? Is there a precedent for this with war dogs or something?

I think we've just ordered up a plate of Dwarven Science. Does anyone recall any published work (read: forum posts) in this field? Unless we uncover some prior work, I will proceed with Dwarven Research when I get home tonight.

For what it's worth, the ones i tried didn't come from the goblin race, it was a modded one. Might cause the difference in responses, might not, dunno.

Hokay, so, it turns out I don't know how to tame animals. I select "Tame a Large Animal" from the kennel and it gives me a cursor... but moving it over anything reverts it to the "q" cursor. If I'm careful and get it away from everything without touching a building, it just says "No buildings nearby." Can someone explain this to me? Do I need to have an eligible, uncaged animal within spitting distance of the kennel?

Actually, the tame large creature command should give you a list of animals that are eligible for taming. Moving the cursor off of the kennel deselects it.

Ah. So, I was doing it right and taming them is apparently not an option.

Next step: Breeding pit?
