Ashes make ground impassible for depot access
« on: March 10, 2008, 08:23:00 pm »

A dragon came and laid waste to the outside of my fort; huuuuge sections of grassland fried. My depot is now very inaccessible due to the ashen squares coming up as can't-be-travelled-on, apparently.

Is this actually a  bug, or a design call?

I had this issue too.  The dragon wasn't ultimately as big a problem as the ashes left by its single use of the breath attack.  Looks like shrubs too small to impede traffic produce enough ash to block it.

I worked around it by building floors on the ashen tiles.  I'm just glad it didn't use the ability more - I might've had a lot of ground to patch!

It'd actually have been convenient if my dwarfs could just collect the ash for potash-making though, as I hate burning perfectly good wood for that.  ^_-

Could you just build a dirt road on the ash?

I thought the dwarves would indeed use the ashes as bars of ash, but I've been known to delude myself.

This is a bug.  I'll note it down.  A lot of things changed when I updated the tile types before the 3D release, and I've missed some cases in places.

Cool. Let me know if you need a save (although I imagine you have tricks to just spawn dragons and such  ;).

Yeah, I'll likely just ash the map.  I could also make the Polar Bear Placement Tool spawn a dragon, but I suppose that's a roundabout way of doing things.

Ah, just because we mere mortals have to rely on third-party things like Dwarf Companion doesn't mean Toady One doesn't have his own set of dev tools at his disposal.

And "Polar Bear Placement Tool" is just AWESOME as a name for a creature spawner.
