Newbie succession fort? (.12, checking interest)
« on: September 21, 2010, 04:09:38 pm »

Are there any newbies here that would be interested in doing a .12 succession fort? I'm fairly new myself, and I think this would be an interesting experience, one that shouldn't need to be overly troubled by doing things like trying to build a megaproject or channel magma or whatever. Yes, it's part of the fun of Dwarf Fortress, but we newbies need to fail on the simple stuff before failing on the complicated stuff  :P

I'm willing to begin the fortress and pick out an embark site, but be warned that my planning method is... overly simplistic. Still, we can always experiment and I hope we can all have fun building it up.

I'm defining "newbie" as someone who less then a few months or so worth of experience of playing Dwarf Fortress.

I wouldn't mind doing a Newbie fort, it'll force me to learn more, considering my last succession made me learn the metal industry :P

I'd be interested in playing. I'm far too conservative with fortresses that I design myself, whereas when I played in a succession game, I had lots of Fun.

Hmmmm...Why not.  I am sure only having experience since .10 (I think?) counts as newbie ;D

Also, I suggest a map with sand, a volcano, lots of trees, and a water source.  (preferably river/lake.  none of those evil aquifers.)

EDIT:  If the newest version were .14 I would agree.  But, odd versions are buggy.  So, unless .14 comes out very soon, I vote we stick with .12

That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

It's probably made from baby bone, with a handle of baby leather. Probably uses the leg bones wound together for the handle, the pelvis for the handle/pick joint, and the pick is the spine.

But that's all in theory, of course. Not like I've made a pick out of my own 5 month old baby before.

We have a decent number of people, I'll probably start this fortress tomorrow or a bit later depending on how much work I have. Everybody expressing interest here can have first dibs on dorfing and signing up for turns btw.

Anyways, .12 is probably best because .13 has the civ sprawl and useless migrant bugs, so I think I'll pass on that. As to location, I've always preferred somewhere with a brook, flux, and next to a mountain/forest, but I'm flexible. As long as you guys don't pick terrifying scorching desert or something, I'll go with the flow and try out whatever we decide.

As for naming the fortress, I think "Angelashes" would be quite fitting, since I have a feeling that that's how we'll end up...

I'll go second/third unless it's order of posting interest.

I'd play, but I think I might be closer to an intermediate level dwarf neglecting tyrant.

well, newbie was not defined.  I still have to figure out the military interface before I consider myself intermediate.  ;)
