The Vanilla Music.
« on: September 21, 2010, 10:47:06 am »

I can't turn it off.

No matter how long its on for it never bores me, I have like 7k songs on my PC but if I'm playing Dwarf Fortress its either RUSH if I feel like a bit of Armor and Sword for those sieges, but the majority of the time its just vanilla music.

What makes it so good? Who wrote it?

Toady wrote it and this is his interpretation.
But honestly, it bothered me after a few weeks. Now I can hardly stand it. I probably shouldn't have played DF non-stop for days.

Its ability to get stuck in your head combined with the listener's inability to actually remember how it goes suggests it may be some kind of ethereal god music.

Much as I enjoy listening to the in-game music, there's a finite number of times I can hear any track on repeat before it gets irritating.

More songs in the same vein would definitely be nice, though.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

The graphics set package I downloaded (Mayday's, I think) has no music for some reason.  So I searched it on youtube and used endlessyoutube to loop it over and over constantly.

It's looped 5,671 times now since I started it (I don't turn off my laptop) and neither me nor my roommate have gotten annoyed with it yet.  Ethereal god music indeed.

I think it fits the vibe of the game perfectly. Strange creatures similar to humans, but still very different, going about thier tasks for reasons only they can understand.

I just wish it were longer and/or there were similar songs you could play instead. Speaking of which, anyone know any good subsitutes? The Fable soundtrack is pretty good (you can find it on Youtube.)

I've played GTA IV using this song as a radio when I wanted to check the thing and was carried away a bit. Does it mean something, huh?

I have a secret project regarding this. I'm trying to expand the soundtrack with new songs inspired by the original game music, on guitar. I've written a couple tracks of it so far and recorded a bit but I'm not sure if I can bone up enough to match Toady's guitar prowess. I don't really want to release new songs that don't match up well.

The graphics set package I downloaded (Mayday's, I think) has no music for some reason.

He doesn't include it to save on bandwidth. Apparently he'd rather people have to download the entire game from Toady as well in order to get the whole thing.
