I dig a chute down to the semi-molten rock. Dump it into the magma flow.

For other refuse like body parts, I turn those into totems or decorate things with bone/shell/hooves/horns.

I craft all usable refuse into bolts, totems, and decorations on the totems or my furniture (for horn/hooves/teeth.)  As for unusable refuse, I leave it in an above ground refuse pile (build a bridge over it for safety) so there is no icky miasma floating around.  Or I airlock it in a dump.

I have my own question, is it possible to say "these things go to this dump, those things go to that dump?"  Because I want my refuse to go to a different dump than my quantum stockpiles...

No, not at present, which is why I don't build an incinerator until I don't need to save anything.

Alternatively, for an external depot, have a dump above your trade depot and ship your refuse off with merchant/garbage trucks. Internal depots will generate miasma which makes people sad.

I use the 'a'ctive setting on dump zones to turn them on and off, when I want to mass dump somewhere and keep the items.  I guess you could also lock a hatch over the dumping hole to save the items.  You would still need to check the pile for any other randomly dumped miasma-causing items though.

I believe that might work...IIRC miasma does not pass through diagonals.  but that is not as space efficient as using an airlock

T= wall
S=space
G=door

and if was in a random wall, something like this?

TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
TGTGTGTGTGTGTGTGTGTGT continues ---->
STSTSTSTSTSTSTSTSTSTS
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

that will keep any dwarf of entering an already ocuped by refuse/miasma

also, for dropping refuse into hole to trade depot for export (TM) the only open space will need be the refuse hole? or the items will change places once traded or something?

Anything unusable (nervous tissue) or less than masterwork quality (which cannot be melted) I chuck into the magma.

I do the same thing. First I turn all skulls into totems. Only masterwork totems are kept and decorated. Everything else gets tossed into magma.

Things like nervous tissue will just rot away on its own, I just leave it be.

Somewhere on this forum is a system (not designed by me, but it's beautiful so I use it) called P.O.R.N.S.T.A.R.S. Look it up. It's beautiful, mostly automated, risk-free if used correctly, involves no risk of accidentally pitting stuff you want, and destroys magma-proof items. Its only limitations are that it can't destroy bins or stone (but it can destroy stone crafts so there you go).

No search results found for "P.O.R.N.S.T.A.R.S." "PORNSTARS" or "PORN STARS" so assuming this isn't just a very poor attempt at a hoax, could you perhaps provide a link?

Is it the "aboveground" or "inside" tags that make rotten refuse randomly disappear?

If I understand you correctly, if you mean stuff like vermin corpses, those will rot away wherever they are, inside or outside.  I don't *think* that temperature or other conditions impact that, I think the speed they rot is the same in all conditions.
