How do you get rid of refuse?
« on: September 21, 2010, 05:24:28 am »

Obviously a refuse stockpile seems like a normal solution, but there are so many TONS UPON TONS of these f*ck**g lungfish jumping out of the river that no stockpile I can make is ever big enough to hold both the fish and cartilage, hair, etc...

So how do I just flat-out eliminate the refuse? I've been trying to figure out if there's some way for my dwarfs to dump the refuse straight into the river, but it doesn't seem to be working. Is there a way to get rid of all this shit? Creative solutions are welcome, even though I'd really just like someone to teach me how to dump everything into the river ;)

Dwarves like to throw things off cliffs, so if you build a little tower and designate the dump at the top on the edge over the river, they ought to chuck it right in.  The tower technically only needs to be 1 z level high, but where's the fun in that?

So my crundles are staying intact unless they're newly spawned... until they are exposed to anything that isn't at room temperature.  This mostly seems to mean blood, specifically, their own.  Then they go poof very quickly.

i'm not sure if dumping stuff into the river gets rid of it. safest bet is throwing it into magma or building a good old fashioned atom smasher ;)

Make sure you have in the (o)ptions screen, under refuse, dwarves set to dump 'other'.  I think then they'll take vermin remains and hair and so on to a dump site rather than save it in a stockpile.  Just be sure that ALL your dump sites are outdoors or sealed away, otherwise you'll have a nice purple cloud of miasma.

You probably want to use the refuse options and 'dump other' and use a little hole to the magmalakes. :)

I believe you can sweep refuse off the map if you dump it at a river's source.

Honestly, an atom smasher is the best, most efficient way.

FYI, an atom smasher is just a drawbridge without any pit under it. When you drop the bridge down, anything underneath (except some animals/demons) will be completly destroyed. Dwarves, goblins, and Garbage (Elves, refuse, nobles etc...)

I believe you can sweep refuse off the map if you dump it at a river's source.

If you dump it at the source it will just sit there, if you dump it at the drain it might get pushed around but will stay at the edge of the map.  The only stuff that leaves the map are visiting creatures and water and magma and stuff you sold to the caravan.

So of all the things you can do in DF, it's the fractal artifacts that make you think dwarves are crazy.

Never mind the magma falls, the atom smashers, the cog-and-axle turing-complete computers, or the colonizing of Hell itself... all those are fine, but man, those recursive artifacts! Where do they get such ideas?
