Making the perfect blood river...
« on: September 20, 2010, 03:15:28 pm »

The plan is as follows:

^#^#
#^#^
^#^#
#^#^
^#^#
#^#^

^ = Weapon trap
# = Grate/bars

Now, I know grates cannot support anything.  I don't know about bars (the DF wiki is down...)  :(

What I seek to accomplish is a way to make incoming invaders bleed by passing through a weapon trap alley set on top of a brook.  To do this, I need to channel a few tiles.  I was hoping for a criss-cross as above.  Is it even possible with the means DF has right now?

Or am I going to have to go with this arrangement:

I'm pretty sure that blood does not pass through grates. :(

Or bars, which incidentally do not support constructions.

Then do I have any possible way whatsoever to communicate the blood down into the river flow when the traps strike?

Drop goblins from a large height INTO the river? Then shoot them with crossbows for good measure.

Install weapon traps in the river. Do as above poster suggested.

is it even possible to have a "pool" of blood that filles in the z-direction like water does? (e.g. water (1/7)  <--shows that the water is 1 deep) would be cool with a river of blood though, but I think it sure requires a lot of blood

How about if one was to drop a goblin a large height onto a cage trap? Would they hit the ground and release blood before being caught?

Brooks are weird things, unchaneled tiles (at the waters level, not the surface tiles) behave like fortifications. As such they support stuff built on top, even when everything around them is carved out.

A more extravagant setup would be to make some <4/7 water flow over a trap-riddled entrance. That way it also washes along the blood covers on the goblins themselves. Beware the sideffect of pets and children getting washed into the river (or dont).

I have an alternate method, though obviously I don't like it as much...

O^^^
^^^O
O^^^
^^^O
O^^^
^^^O

O = open space.

Thus, my hope is that enough blood gets flung on the sides to get into the river, and at the same time, I keep the wagon path clear.

Can't you just make a flow of 1 tile deep water to wash it into the river?

I think your best bet would be to drop the goblins from far above and into the river.

Another way would be to dam it and only let 3-4/7 water through (using pumps or whatever) so that they would be willing to walk into it (and the many weapons traps you'd build there). This way, most of the stuff will end up in the river, instead of just a hole here and there.

Maybe a one tile corridor on the beach of the river full of traps would get something into the river? but I don't think that would be as effective either.

There are tons of ways of doing this, the greater challenge is to keep the river running red all the time. You'd probably need to start with a large supply of caged lifeforms of all kinds.

Personally I'd try to keep a shallow flow (which ends up in the river, naturally) in a room you can drop the caged lifeforms in, from several z levels above.

Anything that produces a lot of mess, really.

But tbh, has all the science been done already? Would it, for instance, work to just injure a goblin with weaker weapon traps, and then put the goblin on a "plank" above the river? So whenever they stumble close to the edge, the fling some blood in there? or are bloodspatters (those with the ability to colour stuff red) only produced the frame the injury is created?
