Ideas for expanded Nobles/Positions
« on: September 20, 2010, 01:25:10 pm »

There are a couple of proposals I have for expanding the current system of Nobles and Positions as well as the customizability (in the raws) thereof:

1. Ability customize noble positions to require rooms other than bedrooms, tombs, dining halls, and offices. Particularly noteworthy types of rooms which currently cannot be required by a position include Sculpture Gardens, Zoos.

2. Expansion of the current [RESPONSIBILITY:...] token system to also be able to designate normal labors which the noble will perform (and cannot be unassigned from while occupying their position) even if otherwise MENIAL_WORK_EXEMPT (the MENIAL_WORK_EXEMPT token would not be implied by these tokens however). For example, the Dungeon Master position might be permanently assigned to the (normal) 'animal training' and 'animal care' labors, in addition to the training specifically of unusual beasts, or the Chief Medical Dwarf might be automatically assigned to one or more medical labors in addition to diagnosis)

3. Corruption. Law making and law enforcement nobles who have grudges against other dwarves, as well as very low levels of DUTIFULNESS, STRAIGHTFORWARDNESS, SELF_DISCIPLINE, or SYMPATHY (or truly abysmally low levels of COOPERATION and/or MODESTY) and/or very high levels of ANGER, (ideally, multiple traits, as well as the dwarf's current mood and their position's level of PRECEDENCE, would be factored in) should occasionally have the dwarf whom their grudge is against arrested on false charges.

4. It would be neat if some of the nobles (which ones would determined by either traits/attributes or perhaps an additional tag in the responsibility token) with the RELIGION responsibility had some kind of minor miraculous healing ability (nothing major, perhaps just an ability to perform the suturing labor without requiring thread or something like that)

Oh, and also, some nobles should get jealous of each other's offices instead of (or in addition to) each other's bedrooms.

What I would like is a [caste] tag restriction for noble positions.
It'd make multiracial societies a lot easier to implement.

I don't know if this has been proposed before (my guess would be that it probably has) but I was thinking the other day about a guild system, which would seem to neatly socket in on top of the existing, well-developed profession system.

If you reach a critical number of highly skilled dwarves in a particular profession they might spontaneously form a guild, which would interact independently of the other political structures: they would set their own import / export mandates like the mayor and would require meetings and negotiation with the mayor to minimize the number of mandates.  Perhaps multiple professions could agglomerate to consolidate power like they did IRL.

The guild also ought to take action to create artificial barriers to entry for less skilled dwarves: some sort of apprenticeship required before the dwarf can serve in any workshop (maybe with training sessions similar to military training) or perhaps the dwarf would be required to get a "degree" from a "university" for upper-class professions that want to pretend they aren't pulling exactly the same scam that plumbers and electricians and the other filthy lower-class wage-earners are ;^) or maybe as a simpler alternative if the dwarven economy gets going again some workshops could convert to "union shops" where each dwarf is required to pay dues... you could even have strikes and strike-breaking by non-guild members, followed of course by the guild members viciously beating the scabs ("Let's see how well you can craft a crossbow with all of the fingers on your right hand broken.")

Can you imagine building up to some perfectly-orchestrated complex project and a strike coming at just the wrong time so that it brings it all crashing down?  That would be so df.
