Why does every Joe Blow dwarf have to be named Urist McWhateverNeeded?

See Wiki for the full history, but it stems from a challenge one player did back in 40d. The "1 dwarf only" challenge - said dwarf had no skills and only 1 pick was allowed on embark. Nothing else - no food, no booze, all other dwarves were killed off including all migrants and traders. Oh and 1 cat was allowed, which promptly adopted that dwarf. The name of that one dwarf? Urist. That's why "Urist" is the most well known common dwarf name and we use it like "Joe Bloggs".

Incidentally, that challenge led to quite a long tale named "One Dwarf against the World" or such.
