Trader on Break...
« on: September 18, 2010, 07:40:03 pm »

My legendary Appraiser decided to go on break moments before the caravan decided to leave after all 100 dwarves have been busy hauling stuff to depot since they arrived... How do I slap the bitch back to work?

Send another mindslave in his place, and beat the appraiser afterwards.
He'll survive.(Hopefully)

Drown him until he's almost dead, then drain the room before he dies. What good is a lesson if your idiot is too dead to learn from it?

The problem is I don't have anyone else with the appraise skill, so I'll be bargaining blind on my biggest trade of the game. Oh well, I'll just make due and that bitch is getting a reprimanding when this is over...

On a side note, is there anything I can do about FPS loss due to blood besides dfcleanmap and a 2/7 pool that everyone has to pass through going in/out of fortress? I just had my first siege and instead of trapping everything I created a bloodbath, my fps dropped from 50+ to under 40 :(

Appraisal skill is gained before trading begins. Your random dwarf will almost certainly gain enough skill to see values.

Come trade time, anyone will learn appraisal skill fast. It's Judge of Intent that you'd want a dedicated broker for if you don't let everyone socialise from time to time.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Always keep a second broker on standby. It's a lesson I learned from having the broker go on break in 3 successive dwarvern caravans, 3 years running.

Somebody on the bug tracker posted a suggestion that seems to work quite well: edit material_template_default.txt and set the default boiling point for blood, ichor, goo, slime, and pus to 10015 (i.e. room temperature underground) or lower, then let the game run for at least one tick. The result is that all of the blood/ichor/goo/slime/pus coatings on units or items (not sure if it also covers said liquids on the ground, but dfcleanmap already covers that) will instantly boil away into clouds of vapor. Said advice came with the warning that it could cause dwarves to spontaneously die, but I left it on for a few weeks of game time and it didn't seem to have any harmful effects.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

What's the point of trading, anyway? Just kill the traders. The only reason I've seen to trade is if you did something like embark on a volcano and can't make steel because of no flux stone. Adamantine is still the best metal in the game. Just kill the traders.

Because we don't want to get attacked by humans, elves, and goblins all at the same time. And killing the dwarven merchants (or at least directly) would result in a loyalty spiral.

no, we don't want them to attack us, but attack each other. indirectly kill them after taking their stuff. then trade those 500 barrels of cloth to the dwarven caravan.

It's probably made from baby bone, with a handle of baby leather. Probably uses the leg bones wound together for the handle, the pelvis for the handle/pick joint, and the pick is the spine.

But that's all in theory, of course. Not like I've made a pick out of my own 5 month old baby before.

Thanks for the tip Quetust, I edited the file and booted up DF hardly able to contain my excitement, but unfortunately I only gained about 2 average fps :(

So I guess the real question is how the hell could a siege cause a permanent 10 point fps drop? I killed all the gobs, traded away all the crap they brought along with a carpel tunnel inducing amount of other crap, and yet my fps is permanently down 10 points... What gives?

Coud be items left over from the siege, still-hidden ambushers that coincidentally came at the same time, dorfs pathing to all the juicy juicy loot...

I have no idea why my broker does this to elves, but never for humans or Dwarfs.

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers
