Noble actually contributes to society! (40d)
« on: September 18, 2010, 12:50:47 pm »

Hi everybody,

I've been playing the game for a while now, and I understand just how ridiculously demanding nobles can be, but apart from the Dungeon Master, I've never known any of them to lift a finger to help those around them. Except for now.
My Countess, Reg Degelnakuth, was spotted picking fruit from the above-ground farms, and placing it in a food stockpile. Is this a common occurrence? Perhaps I should explain a little more:

When the Dungeon Master arrived, everybody at the fortress of Ancientgear, the Ageless Abbey of Artifices, was somewhat happy, what with his skills at making armour and training dogs. However, when the tax collector, count, countess and hammerer turned up, they were...not so happy. They ended up being drowned in a room channels directly into the local brook. Then, when the king arrived, dressed as a peasant, there was panic. This time, the people would get it right. They set to work at constructing a truly might room for the king, and the new count and countess that followed. However, whilst the labour was going on, there was nowhere for these unhappy nobles to live. In the meantime, the Countess, clearly bored out of her tiny mind, decided to pick some fruit and put it in the food stockpile. Nobody knows why.

Is this 40d, or did you actually get a Dungeon Master in .31?

If you set your orders to "All dwarves harvest" that will include nobles and children. They might also deconstruct walls, and other things that don't require labors to be set.

Ahh, I see. For a moment there I thought I'd found some kind of great revelation. Maybe next time.

They can pull levers, too.  Clever things have been done with that.  I don't know all the tasks, but harvesting, deconstructing and activating levers are among the tasks that can be performed regardless of assigned labors.  I think they can build dirt roads, too, but I haven't seen a noble in a long time, so that's not certain.
