Tallguilds (Community Fortress)
« on: September 18, 2010, 12:46:21 pm »

After several of my own forts, I thought it would be a good idea to start a community fort for a change.

Shukardomas, or Tallguilds in the common language is located in a terrifying mountain range (skeletal giant eagles, woo!) and a broadleaf forest, which is also terrifying.

I'd like the starting seven to be claimed before I start.

What the hell, I'll take the female brewer. My forum username is pretty androgynous anyway. So just name her after that.

OOC: This might be taking liberties, but feel free to disregard (or have me edit) anything which does not fit your canon. I am assuming that we arrive through the forest, for one.

Doctor Amostemuth looks around warily. This damnable forest they are traveling through sends shivers down her spine. The trees still lack foliage and look like twisted monsters, reaching for the dwarven caravan. A root has somehow found its way into a wheel six times despite the fairly straight path taken. Two spokes have broken on the right wheel and one on the left one. Although Aurora has claimed that the construction is sturdy enough to stand that, Tazuk worries what will happen when the cart takes more damage. The legends reaching to the dawn of recorded history suggest that this part of the land was the origin of the main demonic invasion and the beasts she has witnessed have not insofar disproven the tales. Undead of all manner stalk this damnable place, it seems. The veteran warrior they had brought along, Minkot, had bravely sacrificed himself a couple of days ago, charging a whole group of half-rotten yet still apparently quite lively Sasquatches who had been chasing the group. The monsters have not been sighted again, so he either won or drew them off far enough that the mindless monsters lost track of the seven survivors.

She recalls the legend of the Eight Pillars, the ancient columns of stone between which the gods themselves are said to have materialized to banish the fiends and cleanse the world. This accursed place is not free of the monstrosities influence though, apparently. The doctor turns rapidly at the sound of a crunch. She cannot see anything in the woods, but that is no reason to assume this place is safe. That fellow, the one calling himself Duriel after one of those human myths, he claims to also be a warrior, but Minkot was always the first into a fight, even after Tazuk had put his shield arm was in a splint after an ogre made a lucky swing at his shoulder. The upper arm was still broken when he charged those zombies; probably infected too, since the creek they had brought water from was flowing in from this accursed forest. He certainly looked pained those last few days.

"We should have taken a safer route, the other groups rushing in be damned. Most of them probably already are, come to think of it. We've only been lucky so far."

From the journal of 'Duriel' Tathurilral:

Spring

1001, 1st Granite

We have arrived. It's quiet. Not even a trace of wildlife or undead creatures.

Tazuk just spotted a Giant Eagle, the ordinary kind. I told him to hurry up, despite us not being in immiment danger. *

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

---

Aurora, our Expedition Leader, decided that we should move inside, as the eagle is getting too close to us.

Some ordinary Hoary Marmots came over the hills. This place doesn't seem so terrifying...

1001, 8th Granite

Urist the Red made some mechanisms for irrigation and some traps, and Aurora made 3 cages.

The irrigation should begin shortly.

---

Our fort came near disaster as Gatleos was a bit late to pull the lever. I heard Urist the Red berating her for her laziness.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1001, 2nd Slate

I fear that Minkot, our brave soldier, has fallen, as I saw seven zombie elephants wandering outside. I need to keep my guard up.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

---

Whoops, fell asleep outside while the zombie elephants were present. We really need those bedrooms to keep things more organized.

Meanwhile, the first cage traps were set. We are not completely safe yet, as large hordes might get past the traps.

1001, 6th Felsite

The first herd of zombie elephants has gone away, but another appeared from the south. And an ordinary jaguar from the west.

The dining hall is now complete!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well, for the most part.

1001, 24th Felsite

I'm going to make some rock mugs for trade, so we don't end up empty-handed when the supply caravan comes.

Aurora pointed out we need to have war dogs at the entrance to keep thieves out. Dag the Wise said he would take care of this, after he had finished mining the smelting area. We do need steel for armor and weapons, but I'd rather have a good bedroom at this moment...

End of Spring

(*OOC: Seriously, what the hell? It was supposed to be a Terrifying mountain range, not some run-of-the-mill savage one. Well, at least some zombie elephants showed up, though they ended up not killing anyone.)

YES! I survived the first update!

That was just Spring of the first year, so don't expect too much. :P

EDIT:

Summer

1001, 1st Hematite

The zelephants seem to be approaching the entrance. I hope they don't get too close...

1001, 5th Hematite

The herd appears to be leaving, so we should be safe for now.

1001, 10th Hematite

Some dark gnomes have come to this cursed site. Our alcohol is stocked far away from them, so they shouldn't be a problem.

The bedrooms are being dug out. Finally...

---

The dark gnomes seem to not pay any interest in our meager shelter, or they simply fail to notice the entrance, which is just a small hole in the ground.

1001, 25th Hematite

Aurora told us to make some serrated disk traps soon. I see her concern, as our fortress is poorly defended in case of a large-sacle attack.

1001, 7th Malachite

A smelter and a wood furnace are being constructed.

The dark gnomes have gone somewhere, two mountain goats migrated to the site.

The bedrooms have finally been completed. Also, a second food stockpile was placed near the bedrooms, because we nearly run out of space.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1001, 23rd Malachite

Steel production has begun. No intruder will get past the disk traps. Except titans.

1001, 28th Malachite

As soon as the mountain goats disappeared, the zombie elephants have returned once again in the distance. I don't think anyone will get killed by them.

1001, 9th Galena

I noticed I seem to have a better bedroom than everyone else. I don't think anyone will mind...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1001, 26th Galena

The zombies are leaving again...

End of Summer

(OOC: Fairly uneventful summer. Though the dark gnomes proved that the mountainous area was definitely evil.)

This place is cursed.
Just two weeks ago my best friend, Minkot Anvilspears, jumped off the wagon in a fit of berserk rage I've never seen in him, running off slashing to right and left. One of my companions, Tazuk, seems oddly familiar to me - even though I've met him for the first time a month ago when we were preparing for expedition, I can't help but remember some odd gray towers and a pool of blood under one of them whenever I look at his face. I think I'm going crazy in this place...
At least I was lucky to claim the broker's position to myself - with all the zombie elephants outside I'll be safe behind the thick walls of Tallguilds (even though I love working outside at any other place). Also, I've gotten one of two best rooms in this place! At last I'm safe from those mad nobles back at mountainhome... If only those abominations stopped trumpeting above me. I can't get enough sleep from all this noise!

I'll take a migrant dwarf: preferably with military skills but any will do. Make them start training with a sword and shield. Emphasis on the shield.
