Computer Specs
« on: September 18, 2010, 01:31:05 am »

I'm getting a new computer soon, and I'm interested in opinions on whether I should look for something better or go with this.

Intel Core i7-920 processor
8GB DDR3 memory
1TB SATA storage
ATI Radeon HD 5670 1GB graphics card
Windows 7 Premium 64-bit

I'm paying US$1355 for this (although my parents are paying for $800). Thoughts?

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Will this computer be a custom built or a prebuilt?
What will you be using this computer for the most?
What kind of games will you be playing on it if you are using it for gaming

unless you have a specific need for it there's no need for more than 4gigs of ram, And an i7 for most people is entirely overkill, And if you will be using it as a heavy gaming machine than a 5670 probably won't cut it.

Or will be, until next year.

Rock it out, dude. Although if you're building a gaming machine you'd probably prefer two 500gig drives in a RAID 0. Faster file loading.

If its a prebuilt, I cant realy recommend those. You can save buckets of money by building your own, and it realy isnt that difficult. You can match the parts exactelly to what you need them to do and you can also add some custom cooling, RAIDs and other fancy stuff with the money you save.

Also take note of a harddrives rpm.

As for that memory, yeah you wont be needing that untill its way outdated if you going to use it as a gaming machine.

I make Grimlocke's History & Realism Mods. Its got poleaxes, sturdy joints and bloomeries. Now compatible with DF Revised!

As someone with an i7 I say go for it, it's entirely worth it. Your specs look fine so long as you understand and can afford the price tag attached.

1,865.88 NZ... Jesus. That rig really must be top-end. But yea, as someone said before, buy it in parts. Its cheaper, you know exactly whats going into it and you can likely get slightly better gear.

If you're uncomfortable buying in parts and assembling it yourself, I very recently went into the PC assembly business. Dead serious. I'd love to put your machine together for you for a small fee.

It's a prebuilt from a store. I'll probably spend most of my time playing either DF or games off Steam (looking at TF2, Audiosurf and the L4D series in particular).

Nikov, thanks for offering. I'm sort of worried about sending valuable computer parts halfway around the world, though.

I'll think about using this as a bluprint and then assembling it myself (or paying Nikov to).

Easier would be wiring him the money and having him build it then ship it to you.

Oh, Australia...

Yeah, nevermind. I couldn't use your silly kangaroo dollars anyhow.

Find or make a technophile friend locally, or a small computer repair shop and ask if they'd do an assembly.

Sorry, that's outdated - I'm in Cambodia, which uses US currency. So I can do a deal with you! :D

Toonyman (and anyone else), once my business is sorted, feel free to hijack this thread and talk about computer specs-related stuff.

Look, even if you never assembled a pc yourself, give it a go. It's really no rocket science, and you'd have to try really hard to fuck something up.
All parts you buy come with a short instruction explaining what goes where, and the appropriate sockets are built to accept only one sort of part, so you can't e.g.cram a processor into a memory socket.
