Adamantine Wafers?

How come the smelter won't show adamantine wafers until I make strands? And even then, it says I need something on the order of 15k strands...

Because you make wafers from strands, and that giant number's because the hospital can use partial amounts of threads, so one unit of thread could actually be 15,000.

EDIT: it doesn't matter anyways, since I tried to obsidian-ize the magma sea and ended up somehow flooding my entire fortress.
