Did anyone at PAX see the game "Dwarfs" at the power of two booth?
« on: September 17, 2010, 01:15:19 pm »

Only had time to sit there and watch a dude play for about two minutes, but couldn't help but be reminded very strongly of DF.  I said so and one of the reps there said "never heard of it."  Anybody see more of it than I did, and how similar is it?

Diso Faintpuzzles was born in 120.  Although accounts vary it is universally agreed that Diso was chosen by fate as the vanguard of destiny.

In the early spring of 143 Diso began wandering the wilds.

In the early spring of 143 Diso starved to death in the Horn of Striking.

There is a demo out there somewheres. Prepare to be disappointed if you expect anything like Dwarf Fortress though. Felt more like a kids game to me.

Did the game have anything in common with DF other than having dwarves in it?

I got to play it there for a long while.  It sounds a lot like DF if you've only heard a little about it, but there isn't much of a connection.  You basically have dwarves dig around looking for minerals and caves, while trying to prevent them from doing anything stupid like breaching a lava or water pool for the third time in a row.

Actually, it's basically DF with absolutely all of the complexity removed.

So my crundles are staying intact unless they're newly spawned... until they are exposed to anything that isn't at room temperature.  This mostly seems to mean blood, specifically, their own.  Then they go poof very quickly.

They say you can test the betas at http://po2games.com/?p=184 .

I must admit the screenshots are incredibly dwarf-fortress-esque to the extent that they look like the exploratory mining levels on the average fort with a pretty tile set. Breaching lava looks like prima facie dwarf fortress rip off, to be honest, as Tolkien reserves the firey mountain for the bad guys. Having said that, the dwarves in World of Warcraft and Dragon Age Origins have their fair share of molten liquid.

If imitation is the best form of flattery, then Toady should be proud. I doubt the casual gamer arcade crowd would be that interested in Dwarf Fortress. But given that that there are two threads on the front page of this forum about games with a similar look and feel to dwarf fortress, I do hope Toady has access to lawyers, just in case.

Its like they took DF and lemmings and mashed them together, its kind of fun actually, but more of a puzzle game than a truly epic experience like DF.

That is exactly the impression I got.
