A dark cloud is descending upon the Golden City. Waves and waves of transport- and bomber-ships from the Council of Sciences swarm over the city like thousands of insects, while a mighty aerial battle rages on up ahead. On both sides, scientists of dubious morality throw themselves (or, more likely, their inventions) into the fray, or use the chance to go on rampages or loot and steal everything they find.

As city defenses wake up, emergency prodecures go into effect all over. Passenger trains are shut down, entertainment devices begin showing nothing but instructions,  all air traffic is halted, martial law is declared, underground trains stop and magnetically seal themselves...

As it happens, five ambitious inventors are in one of these underground trains when the lockdown hits. But they have no intentions of staying put when all kinds of opportunities await them outside! (A sixth one soon teleports beside them due to a prototype invention nearby malfunctioning, disappearing abruptly from the side of the airship he was hanging onto. It happens.)

There are few people in the same carriage with them. A few old, public info terminals stand in the corner, but otherwise it's empty. The train was stopped just before arriving at the station. There are doors to other carriage on both ends of this one.
