Up/Down Stairs
« on: September 17, 2010, 06:52:17 am »

So I recently learned that an U/D stair provides an entrance for flying units in a mined z-level below even without adjacent up-stairs. And yes, I learned it the hard way (ohai, it's me, death dust breathing beast in your MEETING AREA).

So my question is, can I block this entrance by simply bC-building an up-stairway on top of the dug u/d stairway? Would this block the entrance below?

Yes, that has worked for me (don't remember who suggested it).

hatches? or if it's for an up stairway, i'd say build a wall around the stair and place a door there.

Hatches and doors are vulnerable to building destroyers, but just building a constructed Up stairway will close off the down-side hole permanently :)

Why up-stair? Why not simply floor it over?

i've used hatches but placing floors would probably be the safest.

An up stairway allows the dwarves to go back up the stairs in a 1x1 up/down shaft.  Otherwise, you have to dig/construct extra stairways next to the shaft for access.

Why up-stair? Why not simply floor it over?

So that you can maintain your staircase integrity?  I know that many people build their fort around a central staircase which runs straight up through the fort.  By building up stairs at the bottom you do not have to dig over to the side and dig out another set of stairs to have access to the bottom.

Let me see if I understand what's happening, based on my understanding:

Every tile of rock consists of "wall" and "floor" parts. When you make an up/down stair, you're replacing the "wall" part with an up staircase and the "floor" part with a down staircase. If you dig a staircase shaft and break through the ceiling of a cavern, building an up only staircase for the bottom of the shaft will fill the "wall" section of the tile with an up staircase and replace the empty or down staircase "floor" space with a constructed floor, closing the hole that flying monsters would have flown through.

I don't think hatches can be destroyed from below. This was the case in 40d but I haven't had much chance to test that in newer versions.
