I'm starting to think we are being mass-trolled.  Either that, or the IQ around here has been dropping, and fast.

If this is the gameplay trailer, I don't think you have much to worry about. Looks like a 2d side on rpg to me. Not a management sim.

Btw Guys, the dwarves in Tolkien wanted to eat Bilbo's seed cake. I don't recall beer making a major appearance.

Quote
"And more
cakes-and ale-and coffee, if you don't mind," called the other dwarves through
the door.

Quote
"Let's get out of this horrible smell!" said Fili So they carried out the
pots of coins, and such food as was un-touched and looked fit to eat, also one
barrel of ale which was still full. By that time they felt like breakfast, and
being very hungry they did not turn their noses up at what they had got from
the trolls' larder. Their own provisions were very scanty. Now they had bread
and cheese, and plenty of ale, and bacon to toast in the embers of the fire.

Quote
"Don't dip your beard in the foam, father!" they cried to Thorin, who was
bent almost on to his hands and knees. "It is long enough without watering
it."

YOU'RE WRONG

also this song reminds me alot about DF:
Quote
"Chip the glasses and crack the plates!
Blunt the knives and bend the forks!
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates-
Smash the bottles and burn the corks!
Cut the cloth and tread on the fat!
Pour the milk on the pantry floor!
Leave the bones on the bedroom mat!
Splash the wine on every door!
Dump the crocks in a boiling bawl;
Pound them up with a thumping pole;
And when you've finished, if any are whole,
Send them down the hall to roll !
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
So, carefully! carefully with the plates!"

I stand corrected. Although those were the Tolkien children's story comedy dwarves from the Hobbit, rather than the ones that turn up in the Lord of The Rings/Silmarillion. In any case, indications are that Tolkien dwarves can't take their drink - in real life the attribute of the lightweight.

Nobody needs to bring in Tom Bombadil.

Apparently having a redundant creature entry causes the game to say, "Oh, look, it's crazy world now. Nothing makes sense! Alligators live in houses!"

Well pretty much every fantasy game nowadays is drinking from the tolkien mug for ideas.

He more or less created the standard fantasy setting.

I tried this out. It has nothing at all to do with dwarf fortress. NOTHING.

It is a turn-based strategy game where you mine gold for points and kill monsters.

The only thing it has in common with DF is the very basic theme of greedy dwarves digging.

He more or less created the standard fantasy setting.

Tolkein didn't create the fantasy setting, it was there already... go dig through the folklore of the Germanic peoples.  Large swatches of his world and it's history are based on old Norse, Anglo, Saxon, Celtic, Breton, et al myth and folklore.  William Morris, Lord Dunsany and, especially, George MacDonald were all also acknowledged by the man during his life as strong influences.
Tolkein did have a genius for creating languages and did standardize most of the beings inhabiting the standard setting. Gary Gygax did more to standardize them, by bringing in a much needed strain of sword and sorcery and pulp elements (with his myriad nods to Howard, Moorcock, Leiber, Alexander and Lovecraft among others), and is arguably the bigger direct influence on most high fantasy written from the '80s on (which also contains many of those nods, as well as those to various tabletop RPGs and several CRPGs) and roguelikes which are a known influence on DF's design.

Looks cheap, casual, and cash-cow. Shame, because the graphics are kinda cute.

Not a troll, not some basement-dwelling neckbeard, but indeed a hateful, rude little person. On the internet.
I'm actually quite nice IRL, but you people have to pay the price for that.

Now stop being distracted by the rudeness, quit your accusations of trollery, and start arguing like real men!

Nobody said it's a rip-off. But it could still be inspired by Dwarf Fortress; which was the only thing stated in this topic.

Gameplay-wise it's completely different; but of course it does bear some striking thematical resemblances; such as dwarves, goblins, picking your starting team, digging your own mine, mining for minerals and very purple-clad nobles (and one of the achievements is called 'Strike the Earth!'). It might be inspired by Dwarf Fortress, or not at all; neither possibility would surprise me.

I don't think that 'the IQ around here has been dropping' just by the simple mention of these similarities. I do, however, find that civility seems to be going downhill rapidly by cynical comments such as found in this topic. Do we really need all this sarcasm and spite?

Cute, the achievments list is brutally aware of other games.

edit - but seriously, $5.00? FIVE DOLLARS!?
What the fuck is this, a "$1 for eternal happyness, $5 for five eternal happynesses" scam? ::) to infinity
