Legacy vs SDL? (ANSWERED, but would like clarification)
« on: September 16, 2010, 05:11:39 pm »

I can't for the life of me find the difference between them. Is there really a difference? If so, what?

ANSWER: I downloaded them both and it seems that the difference has something to do with the way the game runs and is compiled. Anything beyond that is unknown to me. It appears that SDL is made for more graphics?

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

I'm probably horribly wrong, but it seems that legacy is meant as a more stable bug-fixish release, whilst SDL does all the new shit, before it gets put into legacy.

If you look back at 40d, "Legacy" would be plain 0.28.181.40d while "SDL" would be 0.28.181.40d2 thru 0.28.181.40d19.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

SDL uses the Simple Directmedia Layer
http://www.libsdl.org/

to render stuff, legacy uses the old code, i think just the winApi or whatever
