My fortress has become boring.
« on: September 16, 2010, 08:18:21 am »

Ive build my fortress, build all the rooms and stuff needed, colonized the caverns, made it safe from sieges, made a fortune in platinum crafts(note no admantine in my zone is it because its a volcano?),and well its just complete,i might try and do some megaproject but it lags too much now,and now its simply watching dwarfs go about there daily business with the odd fb turning up.
I used to play an old 3DO game called the horde,in many ways it was similair to df(you had to build a village and place traps to stop the horde).
Well in the horde once you finished your village you moved onto a new more difficult area,i think this could  work with df = start on easy temperate zone, then desert/haunted/artic zones, unlocking as you go along.
Sandbox games are fun but short lived.

Yeah, once you are able to send armies to enemy settlements/fortresses you can get to the next "stage" so to speak and slaughter the enemy at their home to show them not to mess with you.
I am really looking forward to do that.

Sandbox games do not provide external motivation.  You have to come up with goals yourself.  Which means they can live for as long as you like.

Get a mod that makes the game harder, and impose rules on yourself that makes it harder still.

Try playing the game this way, and see if it becomes more interesting:
- Fortress Defense mod
- No traps
- No building farm plots
- No selling food
- Try to kill every invader.  Seal them in before the fight starts.
- Every kill comes from a dwarven weapon.
- No drowning invaders, no dropping them, no cooking them in magma.
- No reloading
- Objective: Colonize Hell.

And if that's not fun enough, try a biome with no trees and no flux.

I'm assuming a mix of cats/cattle/elephants/other animals from the caverns like Dralthas once the Dungeon Master finally gets fixed.

Just get a couple of breeding annimals one pair of adult elephants can produce enough childeren to keep a medium fort going so allowing a few of them to grow up will keep things going. It might even get difficult to eat all the food.

This is true.

DF has kept my attention for longer than any other game, including WoW.  :o

Colonizing ice is easy, just dig down to caverns,im hoping toady increases the challenge/difficulty as df seems to get easier every generation.Dont get me wrong this alpha has kept me interested longer than full shop games.

It's much easier than it sounds, especially if you have two soil layers.  With diligent irrigation and rock-clearing, there's no limit to the quantity of plants that you can grow.  Brew the plants, then cook the seeds.  Add some milk, some fish, and some meat, and your larder is full.

Dwarfs can drink water it get's them sober but it not a total game killer (especially considering that you can set up a fort and if you buther annimals and use water it can be maintained by 1 butcher for maybe 150 dwarfs? say 75 if he is sober). The main problem with this kind of forts is the fact that your fort is moving rather slowly meaning that you can't expend as quickly and that you will therefor have to think about your defenses.

A boring fort is the result of a boring player.

Find something to amuse yourself.

Might I suggest building booby trapped ziggurats? That's how I pass the time.

Yeah the title may seem a bit whinney, but it was the prelude to a suggestion, nice you never get bored. Also you didnt seem to bother reading my post,as i said my fps are very low in my fortress, too slow for a mega project.
