Unexplained Blackouts
« on: September 15, 2010, 11:13:49 pm »

So, for the past few years now I've noticed these strange blackouts that seem to happen once every few months or so for no discernable reason. My vision will just sort of fade out as a blackness quickly comes in from all sides. There is a heavy compusion to fall down at that point, but not an irresistable one. I have yet to move during one of these incidents, but don't think I am unable to do so. It always seems to happen when I'm looking up, sometimes at a light, sometimes not. This has not really been an issue to me, so I just considered it a quirk and ignored it. However, I have been spurned to ask if anyone has any idea what could cause it because of an incident just several miniutes before writing this. I got up from my bed and all of a sudden found myself unwilling to move. Leaning against my nightstand, I looked up at my room's light as (sure enough) I blacked out for a moment. I guess I must have moved near the end of it, because the next thing I felt was pain as I seemingly staggered across my room and smashed my head into my closet door. The weird part of this is that it didn't seem real. I noted the pain, but for a few moments it seemed to be nothing more than the thought of pain untill I regained my senses fully.

So, anyone have a clue what could be behind this?

I have to say, that does seem a lot like what happens to me. Not all the symptoms match up, but not all cases are the same, according to wikipedia. Well, mystery most likely solved. Good to know I won't have to worry about getting this treated, if Vector is correct (almost certain).

Sounds like shitty blood pressure.

Also if it's bothering you enough to post on the internet about it, just go to the fucking doctor and get an opinion that doesn't come from a quick Google or Wikipedia search. Don't just 'leave it at that' because your health is more important than to just leave it to strangers on the internet.

It isn't bothering me. If whatever this was was going to cripple or kill me, I'd think it would have done so after these past few years. I'm asking here out of curiousity as to what this phenomenon could be. Doctors cost time and money, and won't get me anywhere.

Actually, I believe I've had the same thing happen to me; I randomly get struck by a wave of lightheadedness, my vision goes purple around the edges, then dark, and my ears start to ring. After that, I start to feel like I can't quite catch my breath, even though my breathing hasn't changed, and I get a bit of a chill. Soon after, I pass out, or come dangerously close to it.

I have reason to believe they're Vasovagal Syncopes, myself. My trigger seems to be when my core temperature gets too high and I overheat, while I'm standing. My blood pressure drops, my brain is oxygen-starved, I go unconscious, and in what feels like a minute, I'm conscious again... It's kinda like hitting the Restart button on on my brain. I can always feel it coming, but I sometimes haven't noticed that I've passed out, until I recover.

It's annoying, but if it's a Vasovagal Syncope, it's not lethal in itself, though as with any lapse of consciousness it could be bad. I'd advise checking it out, either way... especially if you're insured. It's the best thing to do for yourself.

You're the Origami Killer.

Actually interestingly enough the topic creator doesn't "lose time" his vision just goes black. I've fainted four times in my life (Once from drinking water, and another from a needle... and got HORRIBLE cramps) and my vision went white.

I have something similar to non-vision blackouts but it is a real condition. Sometimes, rarely, my brain will dump its short term memory with something I just heard.

While it could be vasovagal syncope, it could be a number of other things as well, including, but not limited to:

A chronic low blood pressure, which is as serious a condition as high blood pressure.

A brain tumor.

Narrowing of an artery.

A damaged nerve causing referred reactions.

Diabetes.

Epilepsy.

Meningitis.

And lots, lots more.  Or even more than one of these and countless others.

In short, a lot of health conditions don't simply get steadily worse until you decide you need treatment.  A lot of them remain manageable for many years, until suddenly they are too painful to live with, and too advanced to treat.

Still reluctant to go to the doctor?  Imagine how upset your parents would be on the day of your funeral.

Rant over.  Back to happy thoughts!

I get what the opening post describes when standing up very quickly after a long time of resting in an horizontal position.
vision goes black-ish ( I also have trouble keeping eyes open, so I don't know how black it becomes), I feel a compulsion to at least sit down, but not irresistible, I usually don't move. The last one however is just a way to avoid bumping on obstacles.
It goes away after a few seconds.
I always thought it was quite normal.

It sounds just like that, but much more severe. This happens to me too, but never anything near as bad as the OP describes. I'd recommend seeing a doctor because it sounds somewhat out of the ordinary just from the severity. Something doesn't sound right.

I am barely affected by standing up quickly... to the point where I think people are crazy

I've had doctors tell me not to stand up so quickly.

Well, at least now I know the name for what I had as a kid. Although I only got it from standing up too fast, and characterized it as "all the blood rushed out of my head".
