Build Direction to prevent trapping
« on: September 15, 2010, 03:10:02 am »

Once again it's taking me a long, long time to get this floodgate built without my idiot getting stuck on the wrong side of it.

Would it be worth looking at a Build Direction selector? So before you place the item, you have to select the square you want him to stand in whilst he builds it?

Sounds straightforward enough.

Until this gets implemented, simply place a wall on the tile you don't want the dwarf to stand on, (s)uspend its construction, and build the floodgate. Cancel (remove) the wall when it's done.

Good work around, thanks, never thought of that.

At the same time though, it's a workaround. Hopefully we can get a solution to this. :)

It would be simple to fix with AI change to check path availability to meeting area prior to accomplishing said build job and changing the position accordingly. After all, the path is checked right after the job is completed anyway.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

Even simpler would be to have a dwarf build away from the direction that he arrived in. Nine times out of ten, he will be able to get back the same way he came, as long as he doesn't make a point of moving to the opposite side of the wall first.

Tip: prebuild an escape staircase and then place a floor on top of it when done.

It would be nice to just tell your dwarfs to say level a mountain without having to do it level by level,to avoid them trapping and killing themselves.
