Fortress Goal
« on: September 14, 2010, 07:01:54 pm »

What is your croad Goal/Idal when making a fortress?

Mine would be to have a engraved room for every person in the fortress with armour stand, weapon rack, chest, cabinet, bed and door.
And Enough steal armour, weapons, flasks, backpacks for everyone.
and Everyone drafted into the military:
(I'll use custom sqad names if they are possible, by the time i get round do doing this).
I'ld have 13 squads of 10:
1 "Standing Army" proffessional Soldiers, standard allyear training two people on leave at anyone time.
then 12 militias,  each of which trains 10/10 for one month of the year.
So Granite Squad would train in Granite, Obsidian squad would train in Obsidian  etc

Pave the map in black bronze
Dig a pit down to the magma sea, build a tower in the pit
Colonize the depths

I tend to alternate between the three.

In approximate order of priority:

1. Everyone's basic housing, food and sanitation needs met. Enough beds to go around, clean water for drinking and washing and adequate food and booze stocks.

2. Adequate fortress defences, with sealable entrances and traps to backstop a competent military.

3. A fully sealable 'disaster shelter' with its own farms and well in case everything goes horribly wrong.

4. Civilised living standards; everyone gets their own bedroom with a chest, a cabinet and an engraving of some sort, nobody has to walk around in tattered clothes and there's a reasonable variety of food and booze. A public cemetary in a worked-out seam of metal that's been smoothed and engraved.

5. A multi-layered passive defence system with traps at every intersection, automatically-deploying security gates and an emergency system for flooding everywhere except the disaster shelter... and, once the invasion is well and truly over, draining it again. (A variant that sweeps the entire invasion force into the caverns is ideal.)

6. Statues, engravings and the odd window anywhere and everywhere it's feasible to put them.

7. Something pointless but really cool, like a prison complex on stilts in the middle of a small lake or a pyramid to bury your nobles in.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

1,2,4,6 and 7 of what Jake said. As much as possible made out of green glass.

My newest goal is to find an upright spoiler, and then build the circus tent all the way up to the top of the map before releasing the clowns into it.

Then going to defeat them all in adventure mode.

Cast an entire fortress out of obsidian within the magma sea itself.

Editted for clarity.

As many barrels of booze as possible.  If that means elaborate underground horticulture for wood, and a bustling trade industry to import as much barrelable metal as possible, plus regular sieges...  so be it.  Might as well make them masterwork barrels, too.

1. cast a 28x28x28 cube of obsidian.  Must be above-ground.

2. SMOOTH THAT CUBE

3. Make entire fortress INSIDE THE CUBE (yes, even wells and magma forges)

4. "We are the Beard.  Resistance is futile."

  • Make sure everyone is happily drunk.
  • Build Tower far above ground, completely glass, with bedrooms, a dining hall with a waterfall, and marksdwarf fortifications below the recreational halls - so the dining/sleeping dwarves can watch/listen to the carnage below. Include a Statue Garden, Zoo, and a small hospital.
  • Build Several Fortresses across the embark, one for hunters and farmers close to the surface (preferably within a mountainside or other natural object), a light industry one within the caverns, a heavy industry one above the magma, and the aforementioned glass towers with Windmills above ground for non-industrial purposes.
  • Build a fully automatic self-resetting flushing system for any invaders from any directions. Make it so it first flushed the incoming enemies into an arena, by use of water, or to kill them with magma if the water should fail.
  • Construct marvellous/intimidating halls for dining, for the important nobles, and for trading.
  • Construct a tremendous front Gate, with rows of Pillars, Statues, Ponds, Magma Ponds, Waterfalls, Magmafalls, Murals, Engravings,
  • Adjust the burrows to give each sub-fortress a few permanent inhabitants; Metalsmiths down near the Magma, Hunters near the surface/caverns, Medical Dwarves always near the hospitals, etc.

Not a troll, not some basement-dwelling neckbeard, but indeed a hateful, rude little person. On the internet.
I'm actually quite nice IRL, but you people have to pay the price for that.

Now stop being distracted by the rudeness, quit your accusations of trollery, and start arguing like real men!

Basic survival needs for 200 dwarves + nobles over 10 years on hand (food, booze, basic living quarters, etcetera)
Five tile wide paved road around the full perimeter of the map (all in one, preferably dark, material)
Wall to the hight of the highest terrain point+1 keeping everything coming into my fortress proper limited to entering through my entrance road with it's multitude of traps, drawbridges, and rotating duty guard troops.
Others based on what my current embark has available (HFS, cavern settlement, megaproject, etcetera).  My current here is a grandiose, palatial fortress carved purely from the side of a mountain overlooking a lake, I'm aiming for little to no constructed walls beyond the huge (18z on this map) curtain wall.

Build a great obelisk out of whatever usable stone is on hand.
Export over 1 Billion dbs worth of material.
Total sustainability.

Mod everything.

Aside from the standard logistics (food, shelter, protection etc)...

#1 Completely (as is possible) wall in and roof over my entire embark, preferrably with obsidian or marble blocks. (I invariably embark on 3x3 completely flat areas).

#2 Completely wall in the caverns.

#3 Mine out every drop of blue stuff possible without breaching the fun stuff.

#4 (If I make it this far) Something spectacular involving magma and cave ins.

Does number four involve aiming the magma and cave-ins at the HFS?

Fortress goal?
-have a replayable character live out a huge chuck of his/her life in fort mode
-have kids from this replayable character
-make sure this character or his/her family don't end up kill along the way.

Main goal for 31.x
-RETIRE said replayable character IN STYLE!
-make sure said replayable character is in noble status before retiring.
-move the replayable character family on up  to the East side and finally give them that piece of that pie.
-do this before Toady makes a update that kills all motive of playing this version.

dumb side goals
-find a way to store and capture companions for a conversion mod I'm willing to dump.
-find a way to stay in the body of the character I swap bodies with.
-find a way to give birth stupid fast.
-learn how to use DFhack and make a utility of my own.

Current goal is "Kill all the FBs". All of them. This fort has 14 of them dead, and I'm waiting on new ones to show up.

The fact that my dwarves are mostly all pampered princesses is beside the point.
