Embarking on a mountainside Volcano
« on: September 14, 2010, 09:15:55 am »

So I thought "Hey cool, volcano!" *embark*

Slight problems ensued.

No wood for beds. DOH!
No water for irrigation. Fine, I can do with shrubs.
Barren region, no shrubs or trees. DOH!

How is it even possible to survive on such an embark. Caverns?

Dig to the caverns straight away, yeah.

Make farms and a well down there, and you're good to go.

if you can find a volcano in a tropical biome (makes sense) the game gets really easy. who needs charcoal? i have magma. on embark!

I was hoping for that, but I was so exctactic when I found my first volcano I kinda neglected to check what biome it was in. Barren mountainside didn't play well with me not having enough booze and food to go around. They died of thirst before the first caravan xD

All I had at the moment was Obsidian (and a LOT of it) so built my depot out of that. Unfortunately, my dwarves didn't last long enough for the caravan to arrive.

Go in with 200 or so drink and you can pretty much handle everything else, at very worst you can just butcher whatever animals are on hand and trade for more.  Drilling a well is a huge plus, and so is farming if you can get the water up to where you can use it or if you build farms down in the caverns, but in my experience you can do just fine trading for plants to distill and making booze out of that.  As long as the traders make it to you (not a given) then you can make pretty much anything work, just the hard part is making it through the first year or two.  What I really disliked about embarking on a slope was trying to keep track of invaders, but if you build a nasty enough "welcome mat" that stops being a big problem.

Well, you need to take as much drinks as possible, and start to drill for water. Check each of 3 caverns for lakes, try to melt a glacier if it's there, or look for aquifer. Or you can try to survive on imported drinks only... Wounded dwarves should be killed immediately then. This is SPARTAA!

And no murky pools either, I take it?  They can sometimes be tucked away in unsuspecting corners, but I'll believe you.

Also are there really NO shrubs at all?  Even the seeds from a single prickle-berry plus a tiny patch of soil can begin a fledgling farming project.  Or is there also no soil?  I have no experience with barren biomes.

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)
