Horrifying/Disturbing moments in Dwarf Fortress
« on: September 13, 2010, 11:56:22 pm »

So I began building, mining, etc. in a vast underground cavern, which, unbeknownst to me, had a small serpent-man population. Once I noticed the attacks against my dwarves, I mobilized my squads, and the serpent-men were massacred. My dwarves were not without injuries, however, and they stumbled back to the hospital, returning to their brethren as heroes.

Not long after, a dwarf named Asmel Tosedrigoth started throwing a tantrum (which is odd because I'm not sure if he was even part of the squads). I did his best to find him before he hurt anybody, and I did. I got to watch him attacking a dwarf woman with a pick axe. A woman who was bringing water to the aforementioned bed-ridden war heroes. He hacked her up a bit, ripped her guts out, and then just left her there for dead.

I began devising elaborate ways to make Asmel suffer, but he went berserk first. The few of my soldiers who are able to report for duty will give him a better death then he deserves.

So, anybody else got a horrible/disturbing/sad story to share?

I watched as, during a tantrum, a legendary miner murdered his wife. He put a mining pick through her head, in their room, while their children watched. I was properly shaken up after that.

More bittersweet than disturbing.  I wrote this up a month or so ago?

I noticed this little 'd' sitting at the gates of that fortress day in and day out.  When I went back into the fortress' history, I discovered that Zulban was a wardog who had been assigned to one of my first military dwarves and one of the first military dwarves killed.  He sat out in front of that gate for 10 years after she got killed.  I'm not sure why always the same spot, but he was always there.  I had no choice but to write that story once I learned who he was.

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.

During my first stupendous tantrum spiral I was watching my minions happily maul each other. when things were starting to settle down, I surveyed the carnage. Somewhere in the tide of blood there was a soap maker and wood burner laying on the floor, flashing wounded. I checked them out and...

Both have 2 broken arms and 2 broken legs. They had been wriggling around on the floor trying to bite each others' eyes out.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

I was reminded of an episode of Futurama actually. With Fry's dog from the year 2000, who waited outside the pizza shop for him to come back.

its also similar to the story of Greyfriar's Bobby. When this dogs owner died, it is said to have slept on his grave every night. There is a memorial in Edinburgh.

Are the fortresses there for psychological reasons?  Are they trying to hold back entropy itself, rather than the goblin hordes?

In 40D I had a trantrum spiral of epic proportions in my first Barony. In the middle of the carnage a child gets a Strange Mood, goes to the craftdwarf workshop. On my screen I'm seeing So-and-so has been struck down, so and so is throwing a tantrum, so and so has been struck down, Dwarven Child has crafted Ugerchung, Horse Skull Scepter! It was so bizarre and macabre. Add to the strangeness, the scepter was engraved with the slaying of the dwarf who's death started the civil war in the first place. By the end of it all, between goblins and fighting, the population went from 120 to less than 20.

More disturbing than that is in my current fortress: a dwarven child who has been walking around with "guts popped out" for a year. He's only two.

Shortly after the 31.x update, I had a goblin ambush surprise me while I was setting up a new section of trap hall.  A member of the brave dwarven militia leapt forward, having not yet earned the right to wield sword, he struck out with his bare hands and began to strangle a goblin, dragging it down with him into a pit...

Where he stayed for 3 months, strangling.  And strangling.

Slowly he withered away, the other dwarfs knew not how he kept his strength.  Presumably it was his unending, unquenchable rage.  Or perhaps the joy of bloodshed.  Perhaps he drank deep of the goblin's blood to sustain himself, and much blood there was, for he had broken *every* bone in the goblin's body.

He finally starved to death.  I eventually had to drown the goblin with screw pumps.  Not out of pity mind, but it had a rather nice set of goblinite armor and my forges were hungry.

A giant attacked a war dog; there was only 6 entries in the combat log. Simple, quick, but brutal and horrifying:

In my last fort a naked mole dog attacked my militia commander, bit him in the eye THROUGH THE CLOAK, LATCHED ON AND SHOOK HIM AROUND BY IT.
Winced, did you?  ;D
Still, it did happen.

There's a kid in my fort that is utterly alone. His mother, father, and two brothers are dead. Almost all of his friends are dead as well. So really, the closest thing he had to a friend still was his pet horse. And in the process of locking down the fortress, I just noticed that his pet horse is trapped outside in the middle of a goblin siege. Made me sad.

Despite all the crap this kid has had to put up with, he has yet to tantrum as well. I hope he lives long enough to become an adult.

Well... I play Dwarf Fortress, how much more disturbed do you need me to be?  :P

In all seriousness probably the first time I found blue fun in 40d. The lights were out when I was playing and then a howling gust went by outside. Timing was that enough that I just kinda froze in semi-terror wondering what exactly I had gotten myself into.

It was late at night, don't judge me. >>;

Ogres wrestling unconscious dwarves.  They won't kill them for months, because they will only hit conscious targets.

The first death in my current fortress was a baby.  I don't even know exactly what happened.  I just saw "Urist McCutesy, dwarven baby, has bled to death."  Nobody else died for like five years so for five years the only corpse in my tombs was a baby.
