Uja the Forgotten Beast
« on: September 13, 2010, 07:34:11 pm »

So Uja decided to vist my dwarves yesterday. She came up from the hidden depths, the caverns and underground lake! (woot no more frozen wells) we discovered many z levels below the main fort. She was a large feathered, winged worm (beware the deadly dust!)

She raced across the underground lake heading towards our tunnels eager to acquaint herself with every member of society, I'm sure. I closed the doors to see what would happen. She chose the most direct route and fairly promptly destroyed two doors and continued on her merry way. Unconcerned I watched with giddy anticipation as she headed towards three iron weapon traps (armed to the teeth!)

She strolled right through them. That's right, all three. Without a scratch. Nuthin.

At this point I'm beginning to sweat. So I inform the militia that they are to send three armed squads in to dispatch our new guest.

Uja continues down the corridor. She comes upon a succession of five cage traps. I have no idea what will happen here. She starts through them. At this point I'm starting to wonder what the casualties will be like. But she gets stuck! Not trapped. Not caged. But stuck. She is just oscillating back and forward along the line of cage traps, she doesn't seem to be able to get out.

So I'm expecting to see a squadron of soldiers come marching in any moment to dispatch her... A farmer comes down the stairs hoping to fill his bucket at the well. He sees Uja, drops his bucket and runs screaming.

No military.

I have a look. My soldiers cannot follow order. Which would make sense if Uja was inside a cage, which she clearly isn't.

A hunter, feeling thirsty, shows up with a bucket. Sees Uja, drops the bucket, but instead of running decides to take a few shots at the beast. Injury! finally. He leaves...

No military. Now I know why but not why.

The end of the corridor is starting to look like a bucket stall.

Finally the hunter comes back and finishes her off. I guess he ran out of ammo.

No dwarfs were harmed in the making of this story.

But I don't know why. Thoughts?

It must be a bug because I encountered it too. If you order your military to attack a forgotten beast, they simply won't. However, if you station them near the beast, they run up to it and attack it.

Kill orders are buggy at the moment. Some times they work, some times they don't. Use move orders instead.

That said, you're better off not engaging a deadly dust beast in melee. She could have easily one shotted your entirely military with her dust -- the strength on that attack is off the charts at the moment. Glad to see your hunter decided to solve your problem for you.

I had a similar issue with an FB where it just stopped moving. Halfway through breaking down my layer of 6 emergency-doors (for the purposes of stalling it) it simply stopped doing anything.

Now it just sits there and I carved tunnels and fortifications into the walls surrounding it to make a practise-range for my dwarfs.  It's now a pincussion with 53 bolts embedded in its jasper body with all of its body-parts now red except for its right mandible.  With all its limbs disabled it's understandable that it's not moving any more...but I'm unsure what caused it to stop.  I think it corresponded when I walled-off the corridor it was heading up, but that doesn't explain why it stopped destroying doors and why it remained motionless when i had to deconstruct a section of the wall to let my genius mason out.

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)

This happened to me as well, in fact I just made a post trying to figure out how it got into my fortress. But it did the same thing, chased Burt the Miner, and then stopped and just sat there. I Assumed Burt lost it in the tunnels.

Notes:
I had not yet walled off the path to my fortress BUT,
It stopped when I paused the game in panic, and designated the walls to be built... Maybe that has something to do with it?
I also did a bunch of other stuff, but nothing targeting the beast itself, mostly just canceling build/dig orders and adding/removing dwarves from military duty.

Maybe we found a new glitch?

If you saved the game in the mean time and reloaded, it may also induce buggy behaviour. Saving a game and loading a different one will apparently still retain military orders for my squads. So who knows what happens to other stuff... I suspect something similar was behind the creation of the adamantine spire too in worldgen. "old game" savegame left haunting the DF registers.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.
