Tap the pane of the vending machine, if glass crack by pressing the pencil really hard into it, if plasic just smash it with your fist...

I can tell the difference between glass and plastic just by the sound it makes when you tap it... if there are no other more obvious ways of telling the difference...

You tap the vending machine, it's plastic. You kick it as hard as you can. The covering shatters, and you claim your prize: A bag of beef jerky.
