Elephants x5 value
« on: September 13, 2010, 03:10:50 pm »

Why the heck are elephants worth so much? Given that they're not the dwarf-stomping monstrosities of days past, why are they so valuable? Hell, *unicorns* are less valuable than elephants, and they've got a reputation for being JUST AS DEADLY.

My unicorns just run away from me... I saw them and I was like, ho snap! they gonna stab me! And they just ran away.

I dunno about elephants, I've never done a jungle embark. Ever. But I think it's based more on... semi-realistic things. I mean, Ivory is worth a lot (Or was, I dunno) to poachers IRL. But It's true that Unicorns probably deserve more than that. It'd be like sparkly ivory for the horns.

In short: I HAVE NO IDEA. Can't you just mod creature value?

Yes, you could. Though I find it interesting to ponder why Toady made certain creatures the way he did. Why did he decrease the value of Mermaids? Why are almost all of the cavern dwellers arena restricted? Things like that.

Also are Unicorns really still dangerous? I heard they weren't threatening now.

Picture a dwarf, warrior, mechanic, or some other incredibly useful profession. Now picture him dead. That's what infections do.

I always figured it was because of their mass. Their tasty and delicious mass.

Burning and raping the land is recreational. Where business is concerned, though, sustainability is the name of the game.

I'll answer this question with an anecdote:

I use the wrestlers in my current fort to hunt. They chase down unicorns, punch them until they hurl, allowing the militia commander to finally catch up and behead them with her axe. So far the only casualty of goring that we've had is one of the wrestler's bruised left ear.

And anyway, I'm not *bothered* by the value of elephants, just confused by it. The only other x5 value creatures are Sea Monsters and Sea Serpents, both of which are hard to capture and or fight.

He probably based it on the thing that's useful to your dwarves: meat.
Perhaps the trade value of bone rafts and things needs to be separate?
