how would i go about adding wooden armor?

I'm not sure if i have to add anythign else 

I'm quite annoyed when i start out and there's a tigerman harassing my dorfs, and i cant do much as my guys dont have armor. (I could embark with some, but that would take up valuable points)

Your breastplate is just another breastplate. If you add WOODEN to its name, the game won't think "oh cool it's a wood" and make it for you .

Obviously you will have to make a reaction which takes wood and produces armor, but currently it's bugged (any armor from reactions appears to be of 750000 size). So the obvious solution is to make a metal with the properties of wood and to make a wood-into-metal reaction. The main weirdness will be that you will still be able to smelt your "wooden" armor, but that's the best offer I can give you.

my solution for early armor needs - take a few cheap animals (dogs rate well for cost to bits) and make some bone and leather stuff straight away. bonus - meat and fat.

Actually you can smelt copper armor from the start, with the low price/abundance of the copper ore.

I can't seem to find copper ore in most sedimentary layers. Iron seems to be by far the most common ore I come across.

yeah, same.  native copper is found in igneous extrusive layers and found in sandstone. so if u have sandstone if not
